A series of new developments

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên03/11/2024

Ukraine on November 2 announced that Russia carried out UAV attacks on the capital Kyiv. In another development, Moscow revealed that an American citizen had been in Ukraine for more than 2 years to "inform" the Russian military.

Russia launched a series of UAVs targeting Kyiv

Ukrainian officials said on November 2 that Russia had carried out a series of drone attacks on the capital Kyiv. Debris from the downed UAV fell in six districts of the city, injuring a police officer, damaging residential buildings and starting fires, Reuters reported.

"Another night. Another air strike alert. Another UAV attack. The Russian armed forces are attacking Kyiv again using their old and familiar tactics," Kyiv military chief Serhiy Popko wrote on social media on November 2, adding that all UAVs aimed at Kyiv had been shot down.

Ukraine's DTEK energy company said a high-voltage power line supplying Kyiv was damaged. In a statement, DTEK said most of the power system had been restored and the rest was being repaired.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian airstrikes were also recorded in Poltava, Sumy and Kharkiv provinces. Ukrainian air defense forces claimed to have shot down 39 of the 71 Russian drones, with another 21 “lost track”.

Ukrainian President Complains About Leaked Request for Tomahawk Cruise Missiles from the US

Earlier, the Ukrainian military said on November 1 that Russia had launched about 2,000 drones at civilian and military targets across Ukraine in October. Ukrainian military commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky said on November 2 that Ukrainian forces were holding back one of the most powerful Russian attacks since the conflict began in 2022.

Moscow has not responded to the statement from Ukraine. The Russian military has repeatedly denied attacking civilian targets in Ukraine.

The Ukrainska Pravda newspaper on November 2 quoted a statement from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine saying that Russia had lost more than 1,200 soldiers and 37 artillery systems on November 1. Meanwhile, Moscow said Ukraine had lost more than 250 soldiers in Russia's Kursk region, according to TASS.

Ukraine and Russia did not comment on each other's statements.

Ukrainian President: 'We Could Have Preemptively Striked North Korea If We Had Long-Range Weapons'

President Zelensky said on November 1 that thousands of North Korean troops had been deployed near the Ukrainian border. Zelensky said Kyiv could have launched a preemptive strike on the North Korean troops if given the chance. However, he stressed that to do so, Ukraine would need long-range weapons.

“Now we can see the places where Russian troops are deployed. We can strike first if we have the capability to strike at a long enough range. It depends on our partners,” Ukrainska Pravda quoted Zelensky as saying. The Ukrainian president complained that the West was just “standing by and watching,” instead of taking any real action in response to the information about North Korean troops arriving in Russia.

What does the Kremlin say about the information about 'secret negotiations' with Ukraine?

Earlier, the US said on October 31 that about 8,000 North Korean soldiers were deployed in Russia's Kursk region. Moscow and Pyongyang made it clear that even a scenario in which North Korea sent soldiers to Russia would not violate international law. Russia affirmed that military cooperation activities based on the framework of the Russia-North Korea comprehensive strategic partnership treaty are a matter for the two countries.

On November 1, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, during a visit to Moscow, said that the country will stand with Russia until Moscow wins in Ukraine.

Russia accuses Ukraine of obstructing prisoner exchange

Reuters reported on November 2 that Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine of essentially sabotaging the prisoner exchange process. Ms. Zakharova said the Russian Defense Ministry had asked Kiev to return 935 Ukrainian prisoners, but Kyiv only accepted 279.

"Russia has never refused to talk about the exchange of prisoners of war," Zakharova said, insisting that statements to the contrary were used to discredit Moscow.

Ukraine has not commented on the statement. The last time the two sides exchanged prisoners was on October 18, when 95 prisoners were returned from each side, under an agreement brokered by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

American citizen in Ukraine 'informs' Russian military?

An American citizen was escorted out of Ukraine by Russian special forces after helping Moscow attack Ukrainian troops, according to TASS on November 2. The man appeared in Moscow on November 2 and said he had requested Russian citizenship.

"My name is Daniel Martindale. For the past two years, I have done everything to protect the lives of Russian soldiers," TASS quoted the 33-year-old American citizen as saying.

Russian media reported that Mr. Martindale had been in Ukraine since February 11, 2022. Having actively established contact with Russian security agencies, he reported the coordinates of Ukrainian military facilities for 2 years. The information obtained from this person was repeatedly used to cause damage to Ukrainian military personnel and equipment.

On October 27, Russian troops carried out an operation near the village of Bohoiavlenka in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, and took Mr. Martindale away from the war zone. At a press conference in Moscow on November 2, he said he did not want to return to the United States and hoped to be granted Russian citizenship.

The US Embassy in Moscow has not commented on the above information.

Russia holds nuclear drills

Russia warns US about risk of World War 3

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said on November 2 that the US should seriously consider Moscow's warnings about the risk of World War 3.

Responding to RT, Mr. Medvedev mentioned that US officials do not want World War 3, but for some reason Washington "believes that Russia will not cross the line on using nuclear weapons".

"They are mistaken. If something affects the survival of our country, as the President (Vladimir Putin) keeps saying, we will have no other choice," Mr. Medvedev said.

Moscow has repeatedly said it will retaliate if the West allows Ukraine to use long-range weapons to attack Russian soil. US diplomatic officials said relations between Russia and the US are at their lowest point since the Cold War, but affirmed that Washington is not seeking to escalate the conflict in Ukraine, according to Reuters on November 2.
