There will be a film version of “So do,” adapted from the satirical novel of the same name by writer Vu Trong Phung. The project was recently introduced at the Asia TV Forum (ATF) 2024 Project Market, currently taking place in Singapore.

The film version of “So do” is written and directed by Phan Gia Nhat Linh (author of Co gai den tu hom qua, Em va Trinh ), produced by Anh Teu Studio and Beach House Pictures, Fremantle, and distributed by CJ CGV. The international name of the film is taken from the English title of the novel “Dumb luck.”

Prominent international film and entertainment news sites such as The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, Screen Daily... simultaneously shared information about the film on December 5.

Sharing with Deadline, Christian Vesper - Director of Global Drama & Film at Fremantle expressed his excitement to be part of the production, making a film from such an iconic novel like this.

Conor Zorn, head of script at Beach House Pictures, commented that the themes and sharp satire of “So Do” still resonate deeply with life today. “We are delighted to collaborate with one of Vietnam’s finest storytellers, director Linh, and bring this remarkable work to the big screen,” Zorn added.

According to initial information, male singer MONO will play the main role of Xuan Toc Do. In the original novel, the character reflects the depravity of a schemer who disregards morality to enter the prestigious class.

In previous film adaptations, this role was played by Quoc Trong in “So do” (1990, produced by Vietnam Feature Film Studio) and Viet Bac in the TV version “True Life” (2013, produced by VFC).

Released nearly 90 years ago, the novel "So do" by Vu Trong Phung is still frequently mentioned because it is still relevant and stands out for its realistic and satirical qualities.

The work reflects and criticizes the negative and tragic aspects of the Hanoi petty bourgeoisie in the context of the semi-colonial-semi-feudal society in Vietnam when facing the "Westernization" trends in the early 20th century.

The story has been published in countries such as China, Germany, the US, the UK, the Czech Republic, etc. and received positive responses./.
