This morning, June 10, more than 115,000 candidates completed the literature test of the 10th grade entrance exam organized by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training. According to the exam schedule, candidates started taking the test at 8am and finished at 10am.

After taking the exam, many candidates walked out of the exam room in a happy state, which they said was because the exam was within their ability and "easy".

Doan Hai Phong (student of class 9A18, Giang Vo Secondary School, Ba Dinh District) said that this year's essay was quite easy compared to previous years. "The literary essay section related to the short story Distant Stars was a bit more difficult than the oral literary essay section (requiring one to talk about one's feelings and emotions through an excerpt from a letter from a father to his child). However, this is an exam that does not have any strange, different, unusual or overly challenging questions for students," Phong said, then said that he expected his score to be above 7.5.
According to Tran Duc Quan (a student at Nam Trung Yen Secondary School, Cau Giay District), although he did not review too many literature subjects because he was likely to be admitted to a specialized high school affiliated with a university in Hanoi, he did quite well on the test because the questions were not too difficult. "I was able to complete the entire test, was confident about 70 - 80% and expected to get a score of 7 to 8", Quan shared.
Familiar structure
Ms. Nguyen Hang Nga, a teacher at Hoai Dac B High School, also commented that the literature exam for grade 10 in Hanoi this year was generally within the candidates' ability.
The literary essay section falls on the work Distant Stars , which is a fairly central work in the 9th grade literature program. This section includes very basic questions from recognition, understanding to application. The questions are all very familiar to the candidates' review program, so good students will be able to answer all the questions.

The requirement to write a paragraph is also very reasonable. The summary - analysis - synthesis paragraph is from 10 - 12 sentences, including the use of conjunctions and exclamatory sentences. The social argumentative part has quite good material about the father's feelings for his child. The requirement to write a 2/3 page argumentative paragraph about the issue of controlling one's emotions is also very meaningful for young people about to enter high school. This is a high-level application section that helps classify candidates very well.
"This year's exam is a good one and suitable for the candidates. The exam has been stable over many years and is very well classified according to the candidates' level," Ms. Nga commented.
According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hao, a teacher at Le Quy Don High School - Ha Dong, this year's exam has a familiar 2-part structure. The exam has a level of knowledge differentiation; ensuring classification, knowledge by level from recognition to application and creativity. The level of differentiation is in question 2 of part I and question 3 of part II. The knowledge required in the exam is clear, not confusing to students.
The literary argumentative question requires clarifying the comradeship of female youth volunteers towards one of the four qualities that are quite close to the knowledge students learn in the program. The social argumentative question refers to the mastery of each individual's emotions from a text outside of the textbook that can inspire positive thoughts for students, especially those in their teens.
It is difficult for candidates to get a score of 10.
Regarding the score range, both Ms. Nga and Mr. Hao had similar comments. Mr. Hao said: "A score range of 6 - 7 is the common score range that candidates will achieve. Many students will achieve from 8 points up to 9 points. But from 9.5 to 10 points will be difficult to achieve. In particular, achieving a score of 10 is very difficult, because it requires the essay to be relatively complete in both presentation and knowledge content."
Ms. Nga also believes that many candidates will achieve 7-8 points, and many candidates will also achieve 9. But achieving 10 points is quite difficult, and it is even difficult for any candidate to achieve 10 points.
