Ho Chi Minh City is a place where regional cuisines from all over the country intersect; any regional delicacy in the world can be found in this land.

Satisfy Saigon cuisine

Every time she has a business trip to Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Thanh Huong (24 years old, living in Hanoi) sets aside a day to enjoy coffee and food. For her, it is a time of absolute "relaxation", living in the rhythm of life of people in the dynamic city.

The coffee shop Ms. Huong chose is located right on Hai Ba Trung Street, across the street is Tan Dinh Church with busy traffic. "What I like most here is that there is everything, I can eat Saigon broken rice, Quang noodles, Hue beef noodles, Western pancakes or even Chinese dishes in Cho Lon area... all dishes can be eaten at luxury restaurants or on the street. The flavors of the dishes are slightly varied but very tasty, delicious and cheap," she commented.

Meanwhile, Young-ju (28 years old, Korean) also fell in love with Saigon cuisine because "every dish is delicious and cheap" so she moved to Ho Chi Minh City to work. The girl from the land of kimchi especially likes to eat bun cha, chicken rice, grilled rice paper, fried corn...

Foreign visitors were excited about the street food stalls at the "Promoting Vietnamese culinary culture" festival last weekend.

Fascinated by Vietnamese cuisine, Young-ju convinced her family from Korea to travel to Ho Chi Minh City to have the opportunity to experience it. She revealed: "When my family came here, I took them to eat banh it, banh xeo, bun cha, pho and sit down to drink coffee. My relatives praised me because they did not expect the cuisine here to be so wonderful."

Every time she returns to Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Minh Diem (a Vietnamese living in Japan) visits a restaurant located on the top floor of an old apartment building on Pasteur Street (District 1) designed in a warm, simple style.

"The menu at the restaurant is familiar dishes to Vietnamese people such as: banh khot, nem nuong, tray of boiled meat... delicious. In the space imbued with the countryside, looking across the city's high-rise buildings, I see a blend of modernity and antiquity but still very close," she confided.

Building an attractive culinary destination

By mid-2023, Ho Chi Minh City will have 55 restaurants and eateries listed in the Michelin Guide. This is a positive sign for the tourism industry, helping to increase international visitors' awareness of Vietnamese cuisine. From this list, many delicious and typical dishes are widely promoted around the world, and the restaurants are bustling to serve both domestic and foreign guests.

Mr. Peter Cuong Franklin, owner of the 1 Michelin-starred An An restaurant (District 1), believes that with a rich menu and clean and fresh ingredients, restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City can develop traditional cuisine, combining new elements to further develop the cuisine.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Hoa, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, not only stopping at 55 restaurants and eateries listed by Michelin, Ho Chi Minh City is in the process of completing a set of criteria to evaluate restaurants and eateries from 1 to 5 stars like hotels.

"With a set of criteria that closely follows international standards, we hope to contribute to encouraging international visitors to explore typical dishes. Thereby, promoting culinary tourism with the goal of making Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular become attractive destinations in the region," Ms. Anh Hoa shared.
