The Role of the Parish in Environmental Protection
Coming to the parish in Truc Lam ward, Nghi Son town, our first impression was the straight concrete road leading to the gate of Thanh Thuy parish church, clean and free of garbage. The church is painted in turquoise under the early morning sunlight, blending with the clear blue sky, creating an unusually beautiful and peaceful parish scene. The church grounds are extremely spacious and clean, with rows of green trees shading the paths, creating a cool, fresh feeling.
Mr. Nguyen Van Len, the parish priest of Thanh Thuy parish, warmly welcomed us while taking care of the trees in the yard. It is known that Mr. Nguyen Van Len has always been trusted by the government and the Catholic people. He is the "bridge" that closely connects the government and the parishioners. With the spirit of "charity, charity, and loving religion", he and the members of the propaganda team mobilized the parishes and parishioners to actively support the "For the Poor" Fund, build Great Unity houses, support people affected by natural disasters, support disabled and orphaned children, especially environmental protection work.
Over a cup of cool tea, Mr. Nguyen Van Len shared: Catholics in general, and Thanh Thuy Parish in particular, have always complied well with the State's policies and laws. In particular, the issue of environmental protection is urgent, directly affecting each individual and the whole community. This is not only the responsibility of each government or organization, but also the responsibility of each citizen and each parishioner.
While showing us around the church, he continued: Our parish highly values the importance of environmental protection and combating climate change. In his sermons at the church, the parish priest spent more time emphasizing the importance of protecting the surrounding living environment, improving public hygiene, reminding parishioners not to litter, and limiting the use of plastic products and nylon bags. Emphasizing the viewpoint that "Protecting the environment is protecting everyone's life, each of us needs to be aware and contribute to building a green - clean - beautiful environment".
When the Government and the Parish join hands
It is known that currently in Truc Lam ward, the implementation of the model "Peaceful parish - cultural family" has been integrated by the villages with many local patriotic emulation movements such as: "Building a family of 5 no, 3 clean", ... Truc Lam ward People's Committee has coordinated with Thanh Thuy parish to mobilize all people to participate in the movement of cleaning the environment in public places. Creating connections, every family reminds each other to raise awareness of responsibility for keeping the environment clean in public places, absolutely do not litter in the living area and other public places.
To ensure and effectively implement environmental protection work, the People's Committee of Truc Lam Ward, together with parishes and religious groups, launched the "Green Sunday" movement. Specifically, every Sunday, people will participate in the movement to clean up public places, sweep village roads, alleys, offices, schools, cultural houses, and trim tree branches that obstruct visibility on the roadsides and sidewalks.
The Pastoral Council of parishes and sub-parishes directs people to actively participate in responding and directly cleaning the environment at their units. For public places in front and behind the house, households voluntarily clean up, burn branches, dry leaves, bury animal carcasses, and apply lime powder. Raise awareness of self-classification of garbage, especially plastic waste and nylon bags, leave them separately for collection and treatment by environmental companies.
Organize the implementation of "Month of general cleaning, disinfection, sterilization of the environment to prevent and control livestock and poultry diseases" in the ward; Propaganda and organization of activities in response to World Environment Day, Month of action for the environment and International Day for Biological Diversity; Vietnam Sea and Islands Week and World Environment Day.
Mr. Do Van Hung, Chairman of Truc Lam Ward People's Committee, said: During the implementation of the "Program to coordinate the promotion of the role of religions in environmental protection and climate change response", 100% of residential areas and parishes in Truc Lam Ward have maintained regular environmental sanitation activities. Garbage collection and environmental sanitation in residential areas have been carried out regularly, and there is no longer a situation of throwing plastic bottles, nylon bags, and animal carcasses into canals. The effectiveness of the model contributes to the socio-economic development of the locality. Thanks to that, the material and spiritual life of parishioners in the commune has been significantly improved.
