According to TechSpot , Microsoft has ordered a large number of Nvidia Hopper chips, a line of chips specialized for artificial intelligence (AI). The investment in Nvidia Hopper chips is linked to Microsoft's $13 billion strategy to increase its stake in OpenAI. This cooperation helps Microsoft strengthen its data infrastructure capabilities and develop AI services such as ChatGPT or Copilot, which are expected to be integrated on the Azure cloud platform to expand its cloud computing solution portfolio.
Nvidia Hopper Chip Helps Microsoft Train Large AI Models, Upgrade Azure Cloud Infrastructure, and Deploy Enterprise AI Solutions
Nvidia’s investment in Hopper chips is part of a broader industry trend, with demand for AI chips outpacing supply over the past two years. Big companies like Meta, Amazon, and Google are also accelerating their AI infrastructure upgrades with significant investments.
In China, ByteDance and Tencent have agreed to buy about 230,000 HGX versions of Hopper chips, which Nvidia has modified to comply with US export regulations, a move aimed at restricting Chinese companies from using the technology in sensitive areas.
In addition to increasing chip purchases, the AI race is expanding to custom chip development. Google has been researching Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) for more than a decade, while Meta recently introduced its Training and Inference Accelerator, aiming to reduce its dependence on Nvidia and increase internal competitiveness.
The competition is not only about technology but also about the strategy of maintaining the market position of big technology companies in the near future.
