For young people, every trip, especially self-driving, is a journey that promises exciting experiences. Each journey opens up a new challenge that requires young people not only to have experience and the ability to drive safely, but also to have a certain level of health and endurance.
A 30-year-old man and his 60-year-old mother "ride a luxury car" to conquer winding mountain passes
Yet Hoang Huy (29 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) and his mother in her 60s have accompanied each other through many such challenges. Even on the recent trip from Saigon to Da Lat, Huy's mother drove alongside him to conquer the winding mountain passes.
Hoang Huy tells about the mother and son's backpacking trip: "Huy and his mother traveled by motorbike. The difference from previous trips was that Huy's mother drove the motorbike herself, I didn't take her, because she wanted to have a new experience, she wanted to test herself. The trip lasted 3 days and 2 nights."
Hoang Huy also shared that he has experience traveling across Vietnam, having traveled the entire S-shaped strip of land since 2019, so he also fully prepared protective gear for himself and his mother, paying attention to driving slowly to ensure safety for the trip.
" In terms of equipment, Huy prepares for his mother: a quality 3/4 helmet to ensure head safety, the helmet can help protect both sides of the head and the chin; a good glove so that if my mother falls, she can put her hands on it without tearing or scratching. I also spend time teaching my mother basic experience when driving " - Huy shares about the accessories he prepares for his mother before each trip.
Huy will also ask about his mother's health and current mood. When traveling with an elderly person, health is the most important thing. When her blood pressure is even and her spirit is most comfortable, the trip can really begin.
"The only difficulty is that Huy worries about his mother's health. He is still young so he can only go 100km before stopping to rest. When traveling with his mother, Huy will divide the journey into smaller sections, stopping every 50km so that his mother can stretch, drink water, breathe and rest." - Huy shared.
Huy's job doesn't like to be constrained by time, so before each trip he will plan in detail and arrange carefully so that he and his mother feel truly secure. "I focus on my mother's health and safety. Because she is an elderly person, I also prepare all the necessary medicines such as: blood pressure medicine, cold medicine, headache medicine, along with massage oil for aches and pains." - Huy confided.
Regarding driving skills, Huy will also instruct his mother on basic techniques when driving on long roads, mountain passes, national highways... "Huy wants his mother to enjoy the experience but will not let things go too far or put her in danger while driving."
Huy also confided that his mother had devoted her youth to her family and work and had lived in Cambodia for many years. Only later did his mother return to Vietnam. And now, after many years have passed, his mother wants to go to Cambodia to reminisce about old memories and see the changes in the neighboring country. That's why he took his mother on a motorbike around the roads of Cambodia, traveling more than 1,000km at the end of 2023.
"That was also the longest trip that my mother and I had ever traveled together. It was said to be 1,000km but in reality it was more than 1,200km. Thanks to this trip, my mother and I were first broadcast on VTV9 - the national television channel of the Southeast region of Vietnam Television." - Huy recounted the Saigon - Cambodia trip of mother and son at the end of 2023.
After this trip to Cambodia, Huy and his mother plan to ride a motorbike to Cambodia via Thailand for a 6-day, 5-night journey, covering 1,234km. "Huy has planned and planned to start the trip when his mother finishes resting and recovering. The trip is expected to take place in July 2024." - Huy shared.

My mother raised me alone, so I want to spend all my free time with her "finding my youth again".
Huy shared: "My mother is a good motorbike rider because she used to drive from Saigon to Soc Trang, going back and forth like that all the time. My mother likes to travel by motorbike, she says that it saves money, and you can stop and take pictures wherever you see beautiful scenery. She also loves taking pictures. So my mother and I always take advantage of the time to plan and learn about attractive destinations so that we can continue to travel together."
Huy recounted that when he was young, he once received a certificate of merit for his good academic performance. His mother said that she would reward him with anything he liked. At that time, Huy wanted to go to Vung Tau to swim, so his mother took him there. "That day, my mother drove a Cub to take Huy to Vung Tau, and also took me and my sister on the back. I still have the picture. Because the old photos were a bit bad, they're all blurry now.
Huy confided that he only had his mother as a relative in the family, and she also raised him alone, so Huy spent a lot of time with his mother in daily life such as eating and going out. Huy always tried to balance the time spent with his mother, friends around him and work so that his mother would not feel empty.
Often, trips with older people are very different from trips with friends of the same age. Such trips are often slow-paced, allowing for sightseeing and enjoying regional specialties, rather than requiring a sense of urgency or adventure.
"Huy knows many people don't like to travel with their families, because they think traveling with the elderly will be difficult, but I find it great.
Huy wants to spread this positive thing to everyone, why is a family trip in the minds of many people, so difficult. Not about material or health, but Huy sees that young people are shy when going with their family, they always think that going with family is not as fun as going with friends, lovers. That is a thought that should not be done at all" - Hoang Huy shared.
Huy added that in 2021, Huy's mother had a motorbike accident. After two surgeries, her health declined significantly, and the affected collarbone had to be fixed with screws. However, her mother still preferred to ride a motorbike because she thought that riding a motorbike was not as expensive as other means of transport.
Huy's mother also understands his hobby of traveling by motorbike, so she always wants to accompany her son. "When I was worried about my injury in the past, my mother just smiled and told me not to think about it anymore. The joy of accompanying my child is the motivation for her to maintain her health and try to overcome obstacles. So my mother also exercises regularly every day, takes medicine fully and on time to ensure stable health. Thanks to that, I feel more secure when planning each trip for the two of us" - Huy confided.
