Feast your eyes on the 'unique' black stone castle in Ninh Binh

When it comes to the Ninh Van stone carving village (Ninh Thang, Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh), everyone mentions the stone castle in the center of Tam Coc of artisan Luong Van Quang (born in 1973, Chairman of the Ninh Van Traditional Stone Carving Village Association).

According to artisan Luong Van Quang, the stone castle was built in 12 years and put into use in mid-2020.

The special feature of the castle is that it was built mainly with Ninh Van green stone combined with white stone from the Central Highlands and Central Vietnam. The main material used to make the construction is Ninh Van green stone. Some details are made of white stone from the Central and Central Highlands.

The reason why building a castle takes so much time is because the stone assembly process is very meticulous and detailed to ensure safety and aesthetics.

According to the homeowner, instead of using lime mortar as usual, the castle's stone foundation, columns, beams, and rafters are connected together using stone mortise and tenon technique (using traditional adhesives such as lime and molasses).

The first and third floors of the castle are used to display Vietnamese works of art such as lacquer paintings, stone statues, lithophones, etc. This is also where the exhibition "Hoa Lu Echo" takes place, contributing to attracting tourists when visiting the ancient capital of Hoa Lu.

Many works at the castle have the contribution of many famous names such as painter Vu Xuan Dong, sculptor Dao Chau Khai, and painter Ly Truc Son.

The work “Vietnamese historical ceiling” in the main hall of the villa is a work by artist Vu Xuan Dong.

The stone ceiling of the main hall, the system of stone columns, the pediment and the basement of the villa have the appearance of classical European architecture combined with the images of Vietnamese folk tales.

The brick and curved tile roofs are imbued with traditional Vietnamese culture.

The giant polished stone pillars on the first floor of the castle make many visitors express their excitement. It is known that these stone pillars are designed and built entirely from monolithic Ninh Van green stone.

The castle has the architectural style of Phat Diem Cathedral - a symbolic stone structure of Ninh Binh.

Above the castle is built a wooden frame house with traditional Vietnamese tiled roof.
