Sydney, Australia's largest city and self-proclaimed "New Year's capital of the world", wowed crowds with its traditional fireworks display over the Harbour Bridge.

The bridge was plunged into darkness during the countdown, before giving way to a dazzling display as the clock struck midnight.

Tens of thousands of people gathered at locations along the river to witness the show. About 8 tons of fireworks were used, costing about 4.8 million USD.

Auckland, New Zealand, is the first major city in the world to welcome the new year 2024, along with the capital Wellington. From early morning, New Zealanders gathered in places with good visibility to wait for the fireworks display, despite the rain.

The fireworks display – scheduled to last five minutes at Auckland’s Sky Tower – is the highest in the southern hemisphere. It will feature 500kg of fireworks launched from three locations on the 55th, 61st and 64th floors – some 200-240m above ground.

Fireworks work began six months ago, according to 1News.
