Base MacBook Air M3 gets improved SSD speeds

According to MacRumors , Max Tech's video analysis confirms that Apple has returned to using two 128GB storage chips for the 13-inch MacBook Air M3 with 256GB of internal memory. Last year's equivalent model with the M2 chip only used a single 256GB storage chip. This change results in faster SSD read and write speeds in tests because the two chips can handle requests in parallel.

The base version of the MacBook Air M3 has significantly improved SSD read speeds

Max Tech ran Blackmagic's Disk Speed ​​Test with a 5GB file size test on both the M2 and M3 models of the 13-inch MacBook Air in the 8/256GB configuration. They found that the SSD in the M3 model was up to 33% faster in write speeds, while reading speeds were 82% faster than the SSD in the M2 model. The improvements will likely extend to the base model of the 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip, although Max Tech has not yet explored that model.

Apple’s decision to switch to a single 256GB chip for the base M2 MacBook Air model in 2022 has been controversial, although the slower SSD speeds are unlikely to be noticeable to the average user in everyday tasks. The change will now mean that customers buying Apple’s M3 laptop line will no longer have to worry about having to opt for a 512GB SSD for faster storage.
