Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba
On April 17, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said that tariff negotiations with Washington would not be easy and he planned to go to the US to negotiate directly with President Donald Trump "at the most appropriate time."
Ishiba made the remarks after Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa, who is in charge of the negotiation strategy, discussed the tariff issue with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington. Ishiba said the meeting was positive, setting the stage for the next round of negotiations.
During ministerial-level talks at the White House, Japan called on the United States to review all tariffs it has imposed or is proposing to impose on Japanese goods.
Speaking to reporters after the talks, Minister Akazawa announced that although the two sides have not reached an agreement, they have agreed to resume negotiations at the end of this month to quickly reach an agreement.
Mr. Akazawa also confirmed that President Trump directly participated in discussions at the White House, where the US leader emphasized that negotiations with Japan on tariffs should be a top priority.
On the same day, on social media, President Trump said he met with the Japanese delegation in Washington to discuss tariffs, and assessed the meeting as having "great progress..."
According to a source familiar with the matter, Mr. Akazawa met with President Trump before the ministerial talks between the two countries.
Although Japan is the largest investor in the US, its goods are still being targeted by the US with a reciprocal tax rate of up to 24%.
In addition, Japan is also under great pressure from new US tariffs on imported cars, auto parts, steel and aluminum since March, forcing the country to make efforts to seek exemptions from US tariffs./.
