Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908) was the favorite concubine of Emperor Xianfeng of Qing Dynasty. She became Empress Dowager upon Emperor Xianfeng's death in 1861 and thereafter acted as regent during the reigns of her two sons, Emperor Tongzhi, Emperor Guangxu, and her nephew Emperor Xuantong. She was considered the de facto ruler of the Qing Dynasty for 47 years, until her death.
