Recently, in the area of Dam Dong Lake, Thuy Su Pond (Quang An Ward, Tay Ho District) and Lotus Pond 1, Lotus Pond 2 (Nhat Tan Ward, Tay Ho District), thousands of new Bach Diep lotus sprouts were planted after these lakes were drained to improve the mud layer at the bottom of the lake.
To contribute to the conservation and expansion of the planting area of this special lotus, recently, authorities have implemented many projects to restore Bach Diep lotus.
Lotus growers here will be guided in applying technical advances in selecting varieties, cultivating, harvesting and preserving lotus products.
Up to now, Dam Dong lake has planted about 2,000 Bach Diep lotus sprouts.
According to Tay Ho district residents, Bach Diep lotus has long been grown in small lakes around West Lake. This lotus variety has up to 100 petals and is often used to make premium lotus tea.
However, due to many reasons, the area for growing this type of lotus is shrinking significantly.
It is known that the People's Committee of Tay Ho district has invited experts from the Central Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute and the Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center to coordinate in implementing the project "Building a model of lotus production associated with developing ecotourism according to the value chain in Tay Ho - Hanoi". The project implementation period is from February 17 to November 15, 2024.
Planting lotus around small lakes in the West Lake area partly helps to enhance the urban landscape, helping to regulate the West Lake ecosystem. According to Dr. Dang Van Dong - Deputy Director of the Central Institute for Vegetable and Fruit Research, lotus is considered the national flower of Vietnam. There are many lotus varieties in the world, but Tay Ho lotus has a unique aroma that is not found anywhere else. Therefore, with the determination of Tay Ho district to direct the maintenance and development of Tay Ho lotus planting, along with the support of the Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center, the implementation of lotus planting will certainly be carried out better and more systematically.
Currently, Tay Ho district has 18 small lakes surrounding West Lake. According to the direction of the city and the Standing Committee of Tay Ho District Party Committee, the restoration of raw material areas for growing lotus and lotus tea brewing is an urgent issue at present. In particular, to prepare for the lotus festival in June, Tay Ho district hopes that units will coordinate to support scientific and technical solutions and handle pond conditions for growing lotus.
