According to Android Police , TikTok's parent company ByteDance has just suddenly launched a new application called Whee, which is considered a direct competitor to Instagram. This application is now available on the Google Play Store in some countries for testing.
Whee has a simple interface with three main tabs: camera, news feed and messages. Whee's difference from Instagram lies in the "friends only" photo sharing feature, creating a more private space for users.
ByteDance's new Whee app aims to take over Instagram
However, this move by ByteDance has many people wondering, because the company has just launched TikTok Notes, an application with similar features to Instagram. It is currently unclear why ByteDance developed two separate applications instead of integrating the "friends only" feature into Notes.
Whether Whee will be released globally remains to be seen. This could be a test launch, and ByteDance could end development before it reaches a wider audience.
Whee's appearance also shows ByteDance's ambition to expand its social network market share, competing directly with giants like Meta (parent company of Instagram and Facebook). But whether Whee can create a new fever like TikTok did is still a mystery.
