The Ambassador, Head of the Vietnamese Delegation, congratulated Ms. Elinor Hammarskjöld on being appointed by the UN Secretary-General to the position of Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs, and expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the UN Legal Office for its close cooperation and support for Vietnam over the years, including technical assistance activities and training programs to improve the capacity of legal staff in many agencies and ministries of Vietnam.
At the meeting, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang shared about Vietnam's participation in the legal bodies of the United Nations in recent times such as the International Law Commission (ILC), the International Trade Law Commission (UNCITRAL), the Legal and Technical Commission (LTC) of the Seabed Authority as well as in many recent negotiation processes to build important legal frameworks such as the Agreement on Biodiversity in Seas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) within the framework of the Law of the Sea Convention, the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang affirmed Vietnam's consistent stance of always upholding international law. Therefore, Vietnam strongly supports and commits to continue to closely coordinate with the Deputy Secretary-General, the United Nations Legal Office and other member countries in ensuring the effective operation of legal mechanisms, promoting discussions on codification and progressive development of international law within the framework of the United Nations.
Deputy Secretary-General Hammarskjöld highly appreciated Vietnam's role and positive and substantial contributions at many United Nations legal forums in recent times.
Ms. Elinor Hammarskjöld hopes that Vietnam will continue to contribute more and join hands with the Legal Office and United Nations agencies in the process of reforming and improving the efficiency of the United Nations system, continuing to promote compliance with the Charter and fundamental principles of international law, contributing to strengthening the rule of law for peace, stability and sustainable development in all regions of the world.
On this occasion, the two sides had in-depth discussions on international and regional issues of mutual concern.
