The 2023 MTV EMA awards ceremony is scheduled to be broadcast live on November 5 in Paris and will feature famous singers Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Bad Bunny and Foo Fighters.
"Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to continue hosting the 2023 MTV EMA for the safety of thousands of staff, crew members, artists, fans and partners who travel from all over the world," said an organizer, adding: "The MTV EMA is an annual global celebration of music. As we witness the devastating events in Israel and Gaza, this is not the time to host a global celebration. With thousands of people killed, this is a moment of sadness and mourning. We look forward to hosting the MTV EMA again in November 2024."
France is currently on the highest alert after the murder of a teacher on October 13 in a suspected Islamist attack.
Eight French airports were on security alert and several were evacuated for checks, while the Palace of Versailles was closed again due to security concerns for the third time in five days, the French Directorate General for Civil Aviation (DGAC) said on October 18.
The MTV Europe Music Awards take place annually, held in a different city each year. Last year's event took place in Duesseldorf, western Germany. The awards were last held in Paris in 1995. Taylor Swift leads this year's nominations with seven, including best artist, best song and best video for her hit "Anti-Hero."
