Journey of struggle and growth

In 2000, after graduating from high school, Le Thi Tham (born in 1981) - a native of Tu Dan, Khoai Chau, Hung Yen - and 30 siblings applied to work as workers at Army Corps 16 and were assigned to Production Team 2, Regiment 720 .

Setting foot on the highlands, at that time, each person had their own feelings when seeing the wild and deserted mountains. Life with the difficulties and hardships of having to work and live in harsh climate and weather conditions, transportation, electricity, communication with the outside world... was very difficult.

During the rainy season, the unit's supply trucks could not go to the market to get food because the roads were muddy, bumpy, steep, and winding. Unable to bear the hardships, some people left, while the rest were wavering and anxious. However, Ms. Tham was not discouraged, persevered, and encouraged her colleagues to continue production with peace of mind, believing in the success of the economic-defense project that the Regiment was building.

Ms. Le Thi Tham takes care of the unit's vegetable garden.

Every day, in the sun and wind of the highlands, the young girl diligently takes care of the coffee and cashew trees.

Not letting her down, the trees all cling to the ground and grow green. Admiring the determination of the girl from the longan homeland, a young man from Ninh Binh, the same age, Ta Van Trung, became her husband in 2001.

In the garden, the young couple nurtured each green sprout, turning the gravel soil into a high-yield garden. With that joy, they had two children born one after another. With the addition of new members, they had to arrange their work scientifically, both taking care of the garden to develop the economy and raising their children.

Her child was often sick, she had no capital to invest in the garden, and difficulties followed one another, but they did not discourage the young couple. While completing her assigned tasks well, she also spent time studying to improve her qualifications. In 2004, she was admitted to the Party.

In November 2020, she was assigned to the position of Vice Principal; also in this year, she was elected as Deputy Secretary of the School Party Cell.

In July 2023, she was transferred to the Regiment Political Department, holding the position of President of the Women's Union; in March 2024, she was elected to the Standing Committee of the Trade Union, holding the position of Vice President.

Good at housework, good at work

She is rarely absent from the unit's activities. In 2024 alone, she participated in the Excellent Union Cadre Competition at the Farm level and won First Prize, and Second Prize at the Corps level.

On behalf of the unit's union chairman, in her position as Vice Chairman of the grassroots union, she and the Corps' team participated in the Army-level Excellent Grassroots Union Chairman Competition and won the Third Prize. She personally won the title of Excellent Union Chairman and was awarded a certificate and merit by the Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.

Also in this year, she participated in the young propaganda team of the Corps to compete at the army level and achieved good results. The Chief of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army awarded the entire team a Certificate of Merit.

Ms. Sung Thi Dinh (born in 2000) who is working at Hoa Sim Kindergarten said: “I am one of five Mong sisters who lost their parents and were adopted by the 16th Army Corps . The unit built houses for my sisters and me and ensured our education. When I grew up, I was accepted to work at the unit’s kindergarten and was helped a lot by Ms. Tham.

In particular, she guided and encouraged me to actively participate in the activities of mass organizations in the unit. At school, she guided me to utilize used materials to make toys, contributing to environmental protection and creating excitement for children, so that every day at school is a happy day."

Ms. Tham (flag bearer) won the award for Excellent Grassroots Trade Union President at the 2024 Army-wide Competition for Excellent Grassroots Trade Union Presidents.

Not only completing all assigned tasks well, Ms. Le Thi Tham is also a typical example of good economics.

Her family received 2.24 hectares of coffee and 1 hectare of cashew from the unit. They also saved money to invest in buying 6 hectares of high-yield cashew and land to grow 180 durian trees.

Every year, the family garden as well as the unit's garden always achieve productivity, quality and efficiency. In addition to the output delivered to the unit, the average income from the garden after deducting expenses is 700 to 800 million VND/year, ensuring family life and raising children to study and grow up. With the experience gained in developing the household economy, she is always willing to share with the members of the unit to help each other progress and develop.

Ms. Le Thi Tham (fourth from right) received the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level in 2024.

Through the positions of Standing Committee Member of the Youth Union, Chairwoman of the Departmental Union, teacher, then Vice Principal of the Kindergarten, and now Chairwoman of the Women's Union, Vice Chairwoman of the Trade Union, she always cares for and encourages union members and members to progress together and help each other develop the economy. The savings fund for women to help each other do business, initiated by the Women's Union, supported by members, has now reached more than 300 million VND, helping many members have capital to develop the economy.

During her 25 years in the military, she has always strived to fulfill all assigned tasks. For many years, she has been awarded the titles of "Basic Emulation Fighter", "Advanced Worker", certificates of merit and certificates of merit by leaders at all levels. In 2024, she was a Party member who excellently fulfilled her tasks, achieved the title of "Basic Emulation Fighter", and was awarded the title of "Excellent Union Member" by the Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.
