Towards the 80th anniversary of the first General Election to elect the Vietnamese National Assembly (January 6, 1946 - January 6, 2026) and to serve the 8th session of the 15th National Assembly, on October 23, the National Assembly Office organized a special exhibition of the National Assembly Daily with the first General Election (January 6, 1946) to help viewers feel the atmosphere of preparation and developments of the first General Election.
Attending and visiting the exhibition were President Luong Cuong, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Do Van Chien and National Assembly deputies attending the 8th Session of the 15th National Assembly.
The exhibition consists of two parts. Part I: The National Assembly Newspaper with the first General Election (January 6, 1946). Part II: Displaying the original collection of 15 issues of the National Assembly Newspaper.
After gaining independence, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam faced an urgent need to “organize as soon as possible a General Election with universal suffrage”. In that context, along with the newspapers “Cuu Quoc” (the predecessor of today’s Dai Doan Ket Newspaper), “Su That”, “Lao Dong”, “Dan Chu”, the daily newspaper “Quoc Hoi” was published with the purpose of propagating the value and significance of the General Election for the destiny of the Vietnamese nation. The daily newspaper “Quoc Hoi” also explained the General Election rules so that the Vietnamese people could understand the rights and duties of voters in choosing their representatives to participate in the National Assembly; at the same time, helping candidates for National Assembly deputies have a common campaigning agency to introduce their achievements, capabilities and action programs.
The first general election to elect the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on January 6, 1946 was a major historical event, opening the process of building a new democratic regime in our country. The success of the general election was the result of the solidarity, heroic struggle and sacrifice of the entire Vietnamese people and the great contribution of the revolutionary press in propaganda and mass mobilization, including the National Assembly daily newspaper.
The National Assembly Daily is a special newspaper, published for a short period of time (December 17, 1945 - January 6, 1946) by the General Election Committee in the North with the main content being to widely report on the purpose and significance of the first General Election to elect the first National Assembly. It guides and encourages the masses to participate in candidacy and election; and to fight and criticize the distortions of opposition forces aimed at sabotaging the election. Although it was only published for 15 issues and operated for 21 days, the National Assembly Daily made an important contribution to the propaganda for the General Election.
