Migrating to the new land, the children of Binh Dinh brought with them the rice paper making profession, forming the rice paper craft village in Ea Bar commune, Buon Don border district. With the ability to process many types of rice paper, Ea Bar rice paper craft village attracts consumers throughout Dak Lak province and some southern provinces.
On the last day of the year, the rice paper oven of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xuan Hoa's family in village 7, Ea Bar commune increased its operating capacity. Mrs. Hoa shared: Near Tet, the demand for rice paper increases, all production facilities are working at full capacity. Normally, my family only uses 100 kg of rice to make rice paper, but during Tet, we have to make 200-300 kg per day to meet people's consumption needs.
“In the last month of the year alone, my family produced about 8 tons of rice paper, and after deducting expenses, my family earned about 20 million VND/month. People here make rice paper all year round, producing 3 main types of cakes: large square cakes, black sesame cakes and wrapped cakes. Whether rice paper is delicious or not depends on the selection of ingredients and the technique of making the cakes. The rice used to make the cakes must be fragrant and sticky,” said Ms. Hoa.
The rice paper craft village currently has more than 80 production households. Many of these rice paper production facilities have invested in machinery to increase product output and income.
With her deft hands, peeling each rice paper from the tray and arranging them into the mold, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhi, in village 6, Ea Bar commune, happily said: My parents migrated here and brought with them the rice paper making profession, I took over the family business to develop the profession. Previously, the rice paper making process was all done manually, from 3am to 5pm, only 30-40 kg of rice flour could be made. Later, as market demand increased, the family invested in buying machinery and equipment to expand the production scale, increasing output and quality of the rice paper. Making 200 kg of rice flour each day only takes 3 hours in the early morning. However, to deliver the goods to customers on time, the whole family had to work together, focusing on the steps of drying, harvesting, cutting the rice paper, and packing it into boxes for delivery to traders.
According to the owners of Ea Bar rice paper production facilities, in the current rice paper production process, drying the rice paper determines the quality and appearance. After spreading, the rice paper must be dried in the sun for 2 days to ensure quality and beautiful appearance. This year, the weather has changed, with prolonged drizzle in the last month of the year, significantly affecting production. Because the rice paper drying process depends a lot on the weather, if it rains, the rice paper will be damaged.
Besides, at the end of the year, rice prices increased, production costs were high, while rice paper prices remained stable, profits decreased.
Chairman of Ea Bar Commune People's Committee Nguyen Huu Hung said: Ea Bar rice paper making started in 1982, associated with the process of settling down of Binh Dinh people. Initially, only a few households made rice paper on a small scale. In 2012, Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee issued a decision to recognize the rice paper making village in Ea Bar Commune. Developing to meet market demand, rice paper making establishments invested in purchasing machinery to increase output and revenue from rice paper making.
Rice paper making households in the commune are concentrated in villages 5, 6, 7, mainly from Binh Dinh. Among more than 80 rice paper making households, there are currently 16 households making rice paper by machine, producing nearly 1,500 tons of rice paper each year, with an average revenue of more than 1.6 billion VND/household/year. For households making rice paper by hand, the average revenue is more than 170 million VND/household/year. Rice paper making has helped many families develop their economy and build spacious houses.
Ea Bar rice paper village not only serves the people of Dak Lak province but also expands its market to the provinces in the region, the southern provinces and some northern provinces. From there, it creates jobs for many local workers.
