“No matter where you go, remember the death anniversary of the ancestors on the 10th of March” is a folk song that Vietnamese people have remembered for generations. The death anniversary of the ancestors is an occasion for today's descendants to remember their roots and be proud of the cultural traditions and history of four thousand years of building and defending the country by their ancestors...
In Hung Yen province, there are two typical and unique relics and festivals worshiping Hung Kings and historical figures of the Hong Bang era: the National Ancestor Lac Long Quan Temple located in Lam Son ward and the National Mother Au Co Temple in Hung Cuong commune (Hung Yen city).
These are two temples worshiping the National Ancestor Lac Long Quan and the National Mother Au Co - the first king who opened the 18 Hung Kings' generation associated with the legend of "the Dragon's children, the Fairy's grandchildren" in the history of Vietnam. Every year, at these two temples, festivals are held on the occasion of the third lunar month to return to the origin and pay tribute to the sages. In particular, the traditional festival of the National Ancestor Lac Long Quan temple is held from the 6th to the 7th of the third lunar month; the festival of the National Mother Au Co temple takes place from the 7th to the 10th of the third lunar month. Among the offerings to the National Mother Au Co, the Hung Kings and the sages, the pair of banh chung and banh day are indispensable, with the meaning of expressing the wish for a prosperous and happy life for all people...
Comrade La Van Luu, Chairman of Hung Cuong Commune People's Committee, said: The traditional festival of the temple of the Mother Goddess Au Co in 2025 will include many cultural activities such as: offering incense, worshiping, carrying water, offering products, performing arts, folk games, etc. To ensure the organization of the festival in accordance with regulations and in accordance with the cultural traditions of the nation, the Commune People's Committee has proactively coordinated with the Management Board of the Temple of the Mother Goddess Au Co and local people to actively prepare the best conditions for the festival.
On the occasion of the Hung Kings' death anniversary this year, the Provincial People's Committee directed the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to organize the 2nd Food Festival in 2025, including a contest for wrapping, cooking banh chung, pounding banh day... After the contest, the products of the artisans will be honored to be selected for the incense offering ceremony, offering banh chung and banh day at the temple of the National Ancestor Lac Long Quan and the temple of the National Mother Au Co.
Every year, on the Hung Kings' death anniversary on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month, with a sincere heart, people in some localities in the province prepare a meal to express their gratitude to the Hung Kings who built the country and their ancestors. This cultural beauty is spreading in many families, contributing to promoting the tradition of "When drinking water, remember its source" of the nation.
For many families in Danh Xa village, Hoang Hoa Tham commune (An Thi), preparing a tray of offerings to present at the ancestral altar to show gratitude to the Hung Kings and their predecessors has become a beautiful tradition that has been maintained over many years. Comrade Nguyen Van To, Party cell secretary and head of Danh Xa village, said: The death anniversary of the Hung Kings on March 10 is also the main festival day of Danh Xa communal house. According to the genealogy still preserved, the communal house worships the five mountain gods of the Hung Kings' time who had the merit of defeating the enemy, helping the country, and helping the villagers expand their fields. On the main festival day, villagers go to the communal house to perform rituals: offering incense, carrying water, making offerings... and participating in folk games. After that, they return to the family temple or the family altar to sincerely prepare a tray of food to show gratitude to the Hung Kings who had the merit of building the country.
The Hung Kings' Commemoration Day is the day when the whole nation pays tribute to the merits of the Hung Kings, who founded the Van Lang state, the foundation of the nation, and taught people to plow and grow rice, giving spiritual energy to the land, houses, plants, and animals to thrive, and for crops to flourish and yield bountiful harvests. When all family members are present in the offering tray to the Hung Kings, it is the moment when the traditional source is continued, so that everyone can turn to their roots and better understand the nation's moral of "When drinking water, remember its source".
By preparing meals and burning incense to commemorate the merits of the Hung Kings, every Vietnamese citizen shows their awareness and responsibility to continue preserving and promoting the unique values of the Hung King worship - traditional moral education values.
