In Can Tho city, a "unique jackfruit variety" with durian flavor has appeared with a selling price of 80,000 VND/kg (15 times higher than the price of Thai jackfruit at this time).

According to the reporter's research, the jackfruit with durian flavor (durian jackfruit) is an imported variety grafted with Vietnamese jackfruit and successfully grown in Tan Loc Islet, Thot Not District, Can Tho City.

The person who successfully bred this durian jackfruit variety is Mr. Nguyen Huu Khang in Truong Tho area, Tan Loc ward, Thot Not district. Mr. Khang spent 4 years working in Taiwan (China) and learned about durian jackfruit.

According to Mr. Khang, when he was in Taiwan (China), he tried a type of jackfruit that looked similar to the Vietnamese To Nu jackfruit but had a durian flavor and was not as mushy as the To Nu jackfruit, so Mr. Khang decided to find a way to develop this variety of tree.

Around 2021, Mr. Khang asked to buy some seedlings from Taiwanese (China), then cut the branches and brought them back to Vietnam to carry out crossbreeding. The durian jackfruit branch was grafted with some other jackfruit roots with an initial quantity of about 400 trees, then planted experimentally in his garden and some neighboring gardens in Tan Loc ward.

On the outside, the durian jackfruit looks like the female jackfruit but has the characteristic flavor of durian.

The leaves of the durian jackfruit are quite thin and long, the canopy is large, the branches are covered with hair, the trunk is short and short. When ripe, the thorns of the durian jackfruit are not sharp like other jackfruit varieties but flat, the thorn eyes are large and sparse.

The owner of this jackfruit variety said that the durian jackfruit tree will start to bear fruit after about 18 months of planting. Each tree can produce about 20 fruits, with an average weight of 2.5-3kg/fruit.

After a trial planting period, Mr. Khang assessed that this jackfruit variety is easy to grow, suitable for the conditions and soil of Vietnam. The secret to having beautiful, uniform jackfruit is that gardeners should handle each tree to bear 5-7 fruits, ensuring the fruit ratio is proportional to the tree, to concentrate nutrients for healthy trees.

From the initial jackfruit branches brought back, Mr. Khang has now successfully crossbred 3 types of durian jackfruit with different flesh: pink, cream and yellow durian jackfruit.

Each type will have a different characteristic flavor; in which, yellow-fleshed durian jackfruit is considered superior, with thick flesh, small seeds, especially the jackfruit segments are very similar to durian flesh.

In Tan Loc Islet, farmers have been growing plum trees for many years. When switching to jackfruit and durian, soil conditions more or less affect the quality of the jackfruit trees. Mr. Loc estimated that from the time the tree flowers to the time of harvesting the fruit is about 5 months, the first crop's fruit quality only reached about 70%.

Currently, in Cu Lao Tan Loc, there are a few gardeners who are experimenting with growing jackfruit and durian and harvesting the first crop. Because it is a new and strange jackfruit variety, the selling price is high at 80,000 VND/kg but it attracts many people to buy and try it.

When she learned about this new jackfruit variety, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh in Tan Loc Islet, Thot Not District bought it to try and shared her feelings when she first tasted durian jackfruit. The jackfruit was sweet, fatty, and the jackfruit segments were dry and thick.

With initial success from the durian jackfruit variety, Mr. Nguyen Huu Khang continued to sell seedlings for gardeners to plant at a price of 200,000 VND/tree.

Talking about the technique of growing jackfruit and durian, Mr. Khang advised farmers to pay attention to using organic fertilizers such as kitchen ash, cow manure... to spread in the garden. Pay special attention to preventing stem borers by using fruit bags.

Evaluating the new jackfruit variety in the district, Mr. Truong Tan Luc, Head of the Economic Department of Thot Not District, said that this is the first jackfruit variety with durian scent appearing in the locality and has potential. The jackfruit has been successfully grown by the people and sold on the market at a high price.

In the near future, Mr. Khang will expand and develop the jackfruit and durian variety, and purchase products for export to markets across the country.

Initially, the durian-flavored jackfruit variety brought high economic efficiency. However, because it is a new jackfruit variety, it is not yet possible to determine how the market will be in the long term. Therefore, the District Economic Infrastructure Department will continue to monitor this crop variety to gradually provide guidance and direction for people to grow and develop the durian-flavored jackfruit.
