Russia-Ukraine fierce fighting in Kursk

The Office of the Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced on Telegram that its units attacked a Russian command post in Kursk.

"The attack and a series of recent operations were coordinated with the Ukrainian ground forces, which are conducting a new operation in the Kursk region," the General Staff Office said.

On the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had launched fierce strikes on Ukrainian targets in the Kursk region in response to the escalation of fighting there within 24 hours.

The General Staff Office on January 7 recorded 94 clashes between the two sides in Kursk within 24 hours, compared to 47 the previous day.

Meanwhile, the Institute for the Study of War (headquartered in the US) based on satellite images showed that Ukraine had advanced in three areas northeast of the town of Sudzha in Kursk.

Meanwhile, Russian military bloggers reported fighting breaking out in Malaya Loknya, northwest of Sudzha.

TASS quoted the Russian Defense Ministry's announcement listing six locations where Russian units had repelled the enemy, and seven more locations where Russia carried out attacks, including one location in Ukraine.

In addition to the fighting in Kursk, the Russian Defense Ministry also said that units stationed in central, western and eastern Ukraine had repelled enemy counterattacks in the past 24 hours.

Ukrainian pilot flying F-16 shot down 6 Russian missiles?

Also on January 7, the Ukrainian Air Force said that for the first time, pilots of F-16 fighter jets provided by the West shot down six Russian cruise missiles in an unprecedented mission in December 2024.

"For the first time in the history of the Fighting Falcon series, an F-16 fighter jet destroyed six Russian cruise missiles in a single combat mission," according to the announcement on Telegram.

Ukrainian F-16 pilot shot down 6 Russian missiles in a row in one mission?

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the historic interception took place during Russia's massive airstrikes on Ukrainian territory on the morning of December 13, 2024. At that time, Russia deployed a total of nearly 200 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and 94 missiles against Ukrainian targets, including the capital Kyiv.

Accordingly, the F-16 shot down two Russian missiles with medium-range air-to-air missiles, and used short-range missiles to destroy the next two missiles.

Because the Ukrainian F-16 fighter was only equipped with four short- and medium-range air-to-air missiles, the aircraft was out of missiles and running low on fuel, so it was ordered to withdraw from the area.

However, the pilot discovered another Russian missile heading towards Kyiv, and fired artillery to shoot it down, but ended up hitting two missiles.

Russia has not commented on the above information.

Ukraine received an unknown number of US-made F-16 fighters from the Netherlands and Denmark, and repeatedly used them in an air defense role during Russia's heavy attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky

President Zelensky's approval rating drops after nearly 4 years of war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has seen his approval ratings continue to fall at a crucial time for the Ukrainian military.

Reuters cited the results of a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology released on January 7, showing that Ukrainians' trust in the leader had dropped to 52% in December 2024, compared to 90% in March 2022.

Belarus accuses Ukrainian president of lying

Only 7% of respondents in March 2022 admitted to having no confidence in Mr Zelensky as a leader. That number has now risen to 39%.

“The erosion of trust in Mr. Zelensky will actually undermine his potential and role as a leader,” said Anton Grushetsky, director general of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

Mr. Grushetsky called this a "fatal blow" to Mr. Zelensky, especially at a time when Ukraine faces an uncertain future.
