What to do to use 5G?
To experience 5G service, users must be a subscriber to a network provider that provides 5G and be in an area with 5G coverage. At the same time, users must use a 5G-enabled smartphone and have 5G mode turned on.
Users can use a 4G SIM without having to change to a 5G SIM. Some subscribers will automatically connect to 5G, but there are also cases where users must receive an invitation message from the network operator or proactively register for a 5G package.
To know if your phone supports 5G or not, users can check the 5G logo on the device. Or check the device's technical information on the device's case/user manual/website of the device manufacturer. Or check the network mode in the device to see if the 5G network option is displayed.
What are Singapore and Thailand doing with 5G?
Singapore: A tool for socio-economic development
According to Statista data, Singapore is at the forefront of leveraging 5G resources as a tool for socio-economic development, not only through network deployment but also in technology application, in line with the Smart Nation initiative. Singtel, StarHub and M1 are the operators responsible for operating 5G networks in Singapore.
The country’s 5G rollout has exceeded expectations, with Singtel in particular achieving 95% standalone 5G coverage by 2022 – three years ahead of the government’s original target. This makes Singapore the first country in the world to be fully covered by standalone 5G as of July 2022.
However, Singapore’s 5G goals go beyond just nationwide coverage. The island nation also aims to become a global mobile communications technology research and development hub, partnering with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to establish the first 6G research and development lab in Southeast Asia.
With the rapid development of 5G networks, Singapore could see a wave of 5G technology adoption in aspects of life through systems deployed by Singtel such as automated factory inspection or smart city planning, including improvements in transportation systems, energy grids, healthcare and public security.
Not only that, the maritime industry - an important sector of Singapore - also benefits significantly from 5G. In August 2022, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) collaborated with the Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA) to develop a 5G system for the maritime sector with the goal of expanding automated 5G coverage to all seaports by 2025.
