Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah said on June 12 that the death toll from a fire that broke out at a six-story building for workers in Mangaf City, southern Kuwait, on the morning of the same day has risen to at least 41 people.
Speaking while inspecting the scene, Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister said the building owner had violated safety regulations.
Authorities received a fire report at 6 a.m. local time. Police said the building housed workers. Dozens of people were rescued from the fire, but many died from smoke inhalation.
According to updated figures, in addition to the dead victims, about 40 injured people were taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities said the fire was under control. Authorities are working to identify the victims and investigate the incident. The building owner has been arrested.
Local media reported that the fire broke out in the kitchen of an apartment in the building and quickly spread to other rooms. Initial statistics showed that about 190 workers were in the building, including foreign workers.
