Lucara Diamond, a Canadian diamond producer, said it has discovered a 1,080.1-carat Type lla white diamond of gem quality in Botswana.
The diamond, measuring 82.2 x 42.8 x 34.2 mm, was found at the Karowe Diamond Mine in north-central Botswana, about 512 km from the country's capital Gaborone. It is the fourth diamond over 1,000 carats to be recovered from the Karowe mine since 2015. Lucara Diamond owns the Karowe Diamond Mine.
Botswana is Africa’s leading diamond producer and an upper-middle-income country thanks to its mineral wealth (diamonds), good governance, and small population of just over 2 million. The diamond industry accounts for 40% of the country’s GDP and 90% of its exports.
