In recent times, the work of forest management and protection and forest fire prevention and control has always received the attention, leadership and comprehensive direction of the Party, the National Assembly and the Government. The system of legal documents, mechanisms and policies on forest management and protection and forest fire prevention and control has been completed, creating a legal corridor for investment and mobilization of social resources for forest management and protection and forest fire prevention and control. Awareness of the role of forests in social life and the responsibility for forest protection of local authorities, sectors and society has been increasingly raised.

In 2023, 3,327 violations of the law on forest management and protection were detected nationwide, a decrease of 597 cases compared to 2022; the area of forest encroachment was 1,047.8 hectares. In the first 4 months of 2024, authorities detected 650 cases of deforestation, the area of encroachment was 182.2 hectares, a decrease of 75.7 hectares. The deforestation cases were mainly in the provinces of the Central Highlands, the Northern mountainous region and the North Central region such as: Bac Kan, Son La, Dien Bien, Nghe An, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen...

Also in 2023, there were 310 forest fires nationwide, affecting 674.5 hectares of forest. In the first 4 months of 2024, there were 89 forest fires nationwide, affecting an estimated 498 hectares of forest, mainly planted forests, poor natural forests and young rehabilitated forests, an increase of more than 25% over the same period in 2023.
The main cause of forest fires is the influence of the El Nino phenomenon, with temperatures and hot days higher than average for many years, especially from February to April, along with people's carelessness in slash-and-burn farming and using fire in and near forests.

In Thanh Hoa, forest protection and management work has been drastically implemented, with synchronous solutions to protect forests at the root; forest patrols and inspections have been strengthened, information has been collected to promptly detect and handle acts of encroachment on forest resources.
Thereby, in 2023, the whole province detected and handled 7 cases of illegal deforestation, with 1.88 hectares of damaged forest area. In the first 4 months of 2024, 11 cases of illegal deforestation were detected and handled, with 2.56 hectares of damaged forest area. All violations were detected early and handled in accordance with regulations.
Thanks to good forest fire prevention and control work, there were no forest fires in the whole province in 2023; in the first 4 months of 2024, there was only 1 forest fire in Muong Lat district, with an area of 2.5 hectares affected, mainly regenerating bamboo forests and shrubs.

At the conference, delegates focused on discussing the results achieved in forest management and fire prevention and control in 2023 and the first 4 months of 2024. At the same time, they pointed out the difficulties in forest management and fire prevention and control, such as: The situation of people destroying forests to get land for production and exploiting wood for house construction; illegal logging, forest fires, and forest encroachment are still complicated in some localities; the application of science and technology in forest management and fire prevention and control is still limited...

Concluding the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang requested relevant central ministries and branches to implement forest management and fire prevention and control measures and maximize the value of forest biodiversity. Promote propaganda and dissemination of laws on fire prevention and control to raise awareness among agencies, units, people and forest owners. Strengthen inspection and control of slash-and-burn activities to ensure safety, and do not allow slash-and-burn on dry, windy days.
