Sweet potato is a herbaceous plant of the morning glory family - Convolvulaceae, originating from tropical America. Through trade, sweet potato varieties were brought to many countries around the world, including Vietnam.

A sweet potato provides the body with all the nutrients such as vitamins, protein, fiber, fat, carbohydrates, etc. Eating sweet potatoes regularly helps maintain the flexibility of blood in the brain and heart, prevents the appearance of atherosclerosis, is good for the digestive system, and also supports weight loss.

What foods are sweet potatoes incompatible with?

An article in the Health & Life newspaper points out 6 foods that are taboo with sweet potatoes.

Do not eat with eggs

Eggs are a protein-rich, low-fat food, suitable for breakfast. In weight loss menus, many people often choose to combine sweet potatoes with eggs to provide enough nutrients while still controlling weight.

However, combining eggs with sweet potatoes depends on the digestive system of many people. If you have a healthy digestive system, eating eggs with sweet potatoes will not cause any harm. However, if your digestive system is poor, or you often have indigestion, eating eggs with sweet potatoes at the same meal will put an additional burden on the digestive system, easily causing stomach pain and discomfort.

Do not eat with pumpkin

Sweet potatoes and pumpkin are two foods that have quite good laxative effects, so when combined together, they can easily cause bloating, nausea, heartburn, and even bloating and flatulence if not cooked thoroughly. Therefore, you should consider when combining these two foods together.

Do not eat sweet potatoes with corn

Corn is considered a food with high nutritional content, rich in protein, fiber, fat, and a large vitamin content, 5-10 times higher than the amount of vitamins in rice and wheat.

To digest corn, the stomach needs to secrete a lot of acid and it takes a long time to complete this task, so eating corn and potatoes at the same meal will create a burden on the stomach, causing this organ to continuously secrete acid to digest both corn and potatoes, and it can even cause gastric reflux.

Do not eat with tomatoes

Sweet potatoes contain sugar, so when consumed, the sugar will remain, stimulating the stomach to secrete more gastric acid. Meanwhile, tomatoes when eaten are easily precipitated in a strong acidic environment, thereby causing indigestion, stomachache, and diarrhea. Therefore, if the meal menu already has potatoes, tomatoes should not be added.

Do not eat with bananas

Bananas and tomatoes are two foods that easily make you feel full, so eating them together can easily cause bloating and stomach reflux. Even more dangerous, eating too many bananas with sweet potatoes can also cause chronic poisoning, because food in the intestines and stomach is inhibited.

Do not eat with persimmons

The sugar in sweet potatoes when entering the body will easily ferment in the stomach, so eating sweet potatoes will cause increased secretion of stomach acid. Therefore, eating sweet potatoes and persimmons together will condense and precipitate the acid in the stomach due to the chemical reaction of the tannin - pectin complex of persimmons, thereby causing dangerous digestive bleeding and stomach ulcers.

Some people should not eat sweet potatoes.

  • People with digestive problems should limit eating sweet potatoes to avoid excessive gastric secretion, causing heartburn and acid reflux.
  • People who are hungry should not eat sweet potatoes, especially honey sweet potatoes, because this food contains a lot of sugar. Eating it when hungry will increase gastric juice secretion, causing heartburn and indigestion.
  • People with stomach diseases such as stomach ulcers and chronic gastritis should not eat too many sweet potatoes.
  • People with kidney disease should not eat sweet potatoes because this group of people has a weaker function of eliminating excess potassium than normal, and sweet potatoes contain a lot of potassium. Therefore, eating a lot of sweet potatoes is not good for people with kidney disease, it can easily cause heart rhythm disturbances, affecting cardiovascular health.

Above are food groups that should not be combined with sweet potatoes and groups of people who should not eat sweet potatoes. Therefore, you need to pay attention when eating to avoid affecting your health.
