Golden marks

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of Hue Liberation Day (March 26, 1975 - March 26, 2025). It can be affirmed that Hue is a land that has brought many great changes to the nation.

Hue is where President Ho Chi Minh's will to go abroad to find a way to save the country was formed. As Prime Minister Pham Van Dong once commented: "The time in Hue was the time when Nguyen Tat Thanh grew up and started going to school. Those years were very important for the formation of Nguyen Ai Quoc - Ho Chi Minh, the time to form a strange person, with strange ideas, leading to strange achievements".

The next historical turning point of Hue was the August Revolution in 1945, when this place became one of the three key fighting points in the whole country. The uprising ended the feudal regime that lasted nearly a thousand years, opening a new era for the Vietnamese people - the era of national independence associated with socialism.

During the resistance war against the US, the army and people of Hue continued to achieve glorious feats, especially the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of Mau Than 1968. After 26 days and nights of heroic fighting, Hue became a symbol of the indomitable revolutionary spirit. The Command of the Liberation Forces of South Vietnam awarded the army and people of Hue eight golden words: "Offensive, uprising, bravery, steadfastness". In particular, the feats of the 11 girls of the Huong River Squad during the Tet Mau Than 1968 received a letter of praise from President Ho Chi Minh.

On February 10, 1975, the Central Military Commission approved the 1975 combat plan of the Tri Thien Military Region, with the main objective: "Concentrate all forces of the Military Region and the II Corps, take advantage of favorable opportunities, step up attacks to destroy an important part of the enemy's forces, defeat the enemy's pacification plan in Tri Thien, regain 350,000 people in the rural plains, launch a high-level political struggle in the city, strike hard at warehouses, rear bases, destroy traffic; proactively create opportunities and be ready to seize opportunities to gain great victories, including liberating Hue".

After days of fierce fighting, at 6:30 a.m. on March 26, 1975, the Liberation Army officially raised the flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam to the top of the Imperial Citadel Flagpole, marking a historical milestone: Hue was completely liberated.

This victory not only destroyed the enemy's most solid defense line in the North but also dealt a heavy blow to the enemy's "Clustered Defense" strategy in the coastal provinces of the Central region. The victory at Hue contributed decisively to the victory of the Hue - Da Nang Campaign, creating a lightning-fast offensive in the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign, completely liberating the South and unifying the country.

Improving infrastructure, paving the way for sustainable development

On the morning of March 26, 2025, Nguyen Hoang Bridge officially opened to technical traffic, marking an important milestone in commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hue's liberation. The project, with a total investment of more than VND 2,280 billion, promises to create a breakthrough in traffic infrastructure, contributing to promoting the socio-economic development of Hue city.

Along with that, Thuan An overpass (Thuan Hoa district, Hue city) - the longest seaport traffic project in the Central region - after more than two years of construction, is entering the final stages of completion. When put into use, the bridge will facilitate traffic connections, opening up new momentum for urban development and the marine economy.

Previously, in 2023, Terminal T2 of Phu Bai International Airport with a capacity of 5 million passengers/year was inaugurated, contributing significantly to the strategy of turning Hue city into an international economic, tourism and trade center. According to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), this is the first terminal of ACV to apply digital transformation, upgrade infrastructure and digital platform to standardize operating procedures and improve service quality.

Recently, Hue City officially opened the National Tourism Year 2025 with the theme "Hue - Ancient Capital, New Opportunities" on the evening of March 25, 2025, marking the beginning of a series of cultural, sports and tourism activities taking place across the country. As the ancient capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, Hue possesses a priceless heritage treasure with 8 world heritages recognized by UNESCO, 89 national relics and 3 special national relics. In addition, Hue also preserves hundreds of folk and royal festivals, a rich and unique culinary culture and poetic and majestic natural landscapes. These values have helped Hue become a favorite destination for domestic and foreign tourists, and has been honored with titles such as ASEAN Cultural City, National Green City, ASEAN Clean Tourism City, etc.

Not stopping there, Hue is implementing important projects such as "Hue - Capital of Cuisine", "Hue - Capital of Ao Dai", continuing to affirm its unique cultural identity and distinct appeal. In particular, Hue has become the Festival City of the country with the Hue Festival - a cultural festival of national and international stature. Through each organization, Hue Festival is increasingly more magnificent and professional with the participation of many famous art troupes, raising the position of Hue on the global tourism and cultural map.

According to the Hue City Department of Tourism, in 2024, the locality welcomed nearly 3.9 million visitors, an increase of 21.8% compared to 2023. Of which, international visitors reached 1.45 million, an increase of 16.6%, while domestic visitors reached nearly 2.5 million, an increase of 25%. Notably, the proportion of international visitors accounted for nearly 36% of the total number of visitors to Hue, with the main markets coming from ASEAN, Northeast Asia, Western Europe, North America and Australia. Total tourism revenue is estimated at 7,900 billion VND, an increase of 19.6% compared to 2023, showing that Hue tourism is on the rise, affirming its position on the international tourism map.

Firmly step to a bright future

From January 1, 2025, Hue officially became a centrally-governed city, marking an important turning point in the development process. With its new status, Hue entered the construction and development phase with the mindset of being the first cultural heritage city in Vietnam. This is not only a source of pride but also a driving force for Hue to continue promoting its glorious historical and revolutionary traditions, aiming to become a smart heritage city with rich identity, making the most of its potential and advantages for rapid and sustainable development. At the same time, Hue also affirmed its position as the leading center of culture, tourism, specialized healthcare, education - training and science - technology in the country.

According to Resolution 54-NQ/TW of the Politburo, by 2030, Hue will become one of the major and unique centers of Southeast Asia in terms of culture, tourism, and specialized healthcare, while maintaining its role as one of the country's centers of science - technology, multi-disciplinary, multi-field, high-quality education and training. National defense and security will also be firmly ensured, creating a foundation for sustainable development for the city.

In 2025, by hosting the National Tourism Year and organizing the Hue Festival, the city is expected to attract 4.8 - 5 million tourists, of which international visitors account for about 38 - 40%. Total tourism revenue is expected to reach VND 10,800 - 11,200 billion, continuing to affirm Hue as an attractive destination on the tourism map of Vietnam and the region.

With its rich history, culture and unique heritage values, Hue is entering a new and promising development phase, affirming its position as a smart, unique and attractive heritage city.
