Russia believes that the dramatic change in US foreign policy is largely in line with Moscow's vision and that President Donald Trump is a pragmatist who runs things under the slogan "common sense".

On March 2, in an interview published by TASS news agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that at the talks in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) on February 18, Moscow and Washington admitted that they could not think alike on all issues on the global agenda.

However, both Russia and the US agree to avoid conflict in case of conflicting interests because "the task of responsible powers is to prevent disagreements from turning into conflicts".

According to Mr. Lavrov, this is exactly the format of the current US-China relations, stating: "They have a lot of disagreements, but the dialogue between Beijing and Washington has never been interrupted. I believe that this is exactly the model that should exist in the relationship between any two countries. Especially between Russia and the United States."

The veteran Russian diplomat also called US President Donald Trump a pragmatist who operates according to "common sense", making politics "lively and humane". "That's why he's interesting", Mr. Lavrov commented.

The Russian foreign minister also "praised" the US representatives he met during the talks in Saudi Arabia, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, as being completely rational.

On the same day, in another interview, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the new US administration is rapidly changing the entire foreign policy structure, which "largely coincides with Russia's vision".

According to him, despite major breakdowns in bilateral relations, if the political will of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump is strong enough, the restoration of relations between the two countries can be quite quick and successful, even though "there is still a long way to go".

Mr Trump has shown more agreement with Moscow, even harshly criticising Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a shocking confrontation broadcast live at the White House on February 28.
