Is there a problem with recruiting foreign soldiers?

Hanoi Club has another headache because of foreign players

On the afternoon of November 7, Hanoi FC announced that they had parted ways with foreign player Keziah Veendorp. The former captain of the Netherlands U.17 team had his contract terminated because he did not meet professional requirements. Thus, Veendorp only lasted at Hanoi FC for a mere 2 months.

When he first arrived at Hanoi FC, Veendorp was introduced as having played for the Netherlands U.17 team and worn the captain's armband, and had spent time with Donny van de Beek (former Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester United midfielder, currently playing for Girona). The Dutch player was also considered to have good tactical vision and technical qualities.

However, what Veendorp left behind was only 18 minutes in the Hanoi FC shirt, before packing up and leaving. The former Netherlands U.17 midfielder was not physically fit enough to play the entire match, nor did he have anything special in terms of technique, tactics or experience.

Veendorp is proof of the poor quality of foreign players at Hanoi Club.

Veendorp was an unsuccessful contract, Hanoi FC recruited Jakhongir. The Uzbek foreign player was also not outstanding, but he used to play for Viettel FC in V-League. That was the choice to "put out the fire" of the capital team's coaching staff.

This season, Hanoi FC recruited foreign players including Veendorp, Joao Pedro and Augustine Chidi Kwen. However, while in most V-League teams, foreign players carry the playing style for foreign players, the story at Hanoi FC goes in the opposite direction.

Hanoi's foreign players failed to show anything. In the match against Thanh Hoa, coach Le Duc Tuan had to use a lineup of domestic players and overseas Vietnamese. Chidi Kwen, the highest-rated foreign player in V-League (according to Transfermarkt ), was also not registered to play. Most likely, the Nigerian striker will soon leave.

The recession cycle of Hanoi FC appeared after the 2022 season, when the capital team suffered a "brain drain", losing many good players, while the next generation did not show much.

Meanwhile, Hanoi FC's foreign player recruitment is very poor. Last season, Hanoi FC brought in many foreign stars to finalize the list of 6 foreign players for the AFC Champions League. These include Damien le Tallec (who used to play for Borussia Dortmund), Joel Tagueu, Milan Jevtovic, Marcao and Brandon Wilson. Then, the team brought in Tim Hall.

Overseas Vietnamese and domestic players are "carrying" Hanoi FC

However, after only half a season, most of these foreign players had to leave. When coach Daiki Iwamasa took over, he only trusted one foreign player, Tim Hall, in defense. Tagueu mostly came on as a substitute. He missed a penalty in the 2023-2024 National Cup final, contributing to Hanoi FC's regretful loss to Thanh Hoa.

In total, in the last 3 seasons, Hanoi FC has recruited around 15 foreign players, but apart from Marcao, no name has left an impression. Even in the most recent championship season (2022), Hanoi FC also fell into a situation where domestic players carried foreign players. Eastern European players brought in from some of Hanoi's "favorite" connections did not play well.

It is easy to see that in the past, Hanoi FC was successful thanks to a good source of foreign players. Foreign players mainly shined in other V-League teams, before arriving at Hang Day.

Currently, Hanoi FC prioritizes completely new foreign players. Poor scouting has led to foreign players becoming a headache for the capital team.
