Taking advantage of favorable weather, on the 3rd day of the Lunar New Year 2025, Ms. Luong Thi Phong of Van Hoa Cooperative, Trieu Hoa Commune, Trieu Phong District urgently went to the field to prune and fertilize nearly 1 hectare of rice, using the HC95 rice variety that had just been sown about 20 days ago.
According to Ms. Phong, the time of sowing was affected by the prolonged cold rain, causing the rice plants to have “white leaves” and slow growth. However, since before Tet until now, the weather has been relatively good, with warm sunny days, so the rice plants are gradually recovering. In order for the rice plants to grow well, along with pruning, she is adding NPK fertilizer to stimulate the rice to tiller.
“After the Tet holidays with our families, we farmers return to the fields in high spirits. We hope that the weather will be favorable for a bumper crop, bringing a stable income to the farmers,” said Ms. Phong.
This winter-spring crop, Van Hoa Cooperative planted more than 180 hectares of rice with the main varieties being Ha Phat 3, HG12 and HC95. Of which, there are 2 production models associated with enterprises: a model associated with Quang Tri Trading Corporation to produce organic rice with an area of 23 hectares and a land accumulation model of 7 hectares with 2 participating households.
Taking advantage of favorable weather, since the third day of the Lunar New Year, many members have gone to the fields to check the rice, prune and fertilize the rice. Director of Van Hoa Cooperative Nguyen Van Dinh said that, with the forecast that after Tet, the weather may change erratically, affecting the growth of rice plants as well as creating conditions for pests to arise and cause damage, the Cooperative has instructed members to urgently go to the fields to take care of the rice, fertilize to promote tillering.
“After being affected by cold rains, the rice plants are now growing well. This is the joy of our farmers in the first days of the new year At Ty 2025,” said Mr. Dinh.
Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Trieu Phong district, Tran Thien Nhan, informed that up to this point, the whole district has planted over 5,950 hectares of rice, reaching 100% of the plan. Of which, the area of high-quality rice with varieties such as HC95, Ha Phat 3, HG12, HG244, TBR97... accounts for over 81%, over 350 hectares of corn, 310 hectares of peanuts, 1,650 hectares of various vegetables.
Directed the production of 71 hectares of naturally cultivated rice at Trieu Phong Clean Agricultural Products Cooperative, of which 11 hectares met organic standards. Coordinated with Quang Tri Trading Corporation to link production and consumption of organic rice with a total area of 30 hectares in Trieu Hoa and Trieu Tai communes; coordinated with Dong Tam Company to link consumption of 40 hectares of Ha Phat 3 commercial rice in Trieu Trung commune.
Cooperating with the Quang Tri Agricultural Seed Center to produce and consume 16.5 hectares of HC95 rice variety in Trieu Giang and Trieu Do communes; and producing and consuming 13 hectares of Bac Thom No. 7 commercial rice in Trieu Tai commune. According to Mr. Nhan, in general, this year's winter-spring rice crop grew more slowly than previous years due to prolonged cold weather during sowing.
Currently, after the Lunar New Year holidays, farmers are focusing on completing the first round of fertilization and pruning early-sown rice. Localities are also focusing on monitoring weather developments to guide farmers in taking timely measures to care for and prevent pests and diseases.
Similarly, in Hai Lang district, at this time farmers have gathered in the fields to prune and fertilize rice plants.
Vice Chairman of Hai Lang District People's Committee Duong Viet Hai said that despite facing many difficulties due to prolonged cold and rain, thanks to the proactiveness and positivity of localities and farmers in closely following the fields, monitoring weather developments, enhancing flood control capacity, and taking advantage of favorable weather to speed up the sowing progress, the entire district has so far completed sowing nearly 6,900 hectares of winter-spring rice, ensuring the set plan. Currently, the weather is favorable so the rice plants are growing well, and no pests or diseases have occurred. Farmers in the district are focusing on caring for, pruning, and fertilizing the rice plants.
According to statistics from the agricultural sector, up to now, the whole province has completed the winter-spring rice crop with an area of over 25,500 hectares, reaching over 100% of the plan. Other crops such as: corn 2,000 hectares, reaching 50% of the plan; peanuts 1,000 hectares, reaching 30% of the plan; cassava 4,500 hectares, reaching 40% of the plan and more than 2,000 hectares of various vegetables. The weather before and during the Lunar New Year At Ty was basically favorable for the growth of all crops.
After Tet, farmers are taking care of pruning, fertilizing rice plants and speeding up the planting of upland crops according to the seasonal schedule. Currently, rice and flower fields are growing well. There are no natural disasters or epidemics.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hong Phuong noted that the current weather with light sunshine alternating with spring rain, cold at night and early morning is a favorable condition for crop growth but also favorable for pests and diseases to arise and cause damage.
Therefore, farmers need to increase field visits and proactively take appropriate response measures to minimize impacts, especially in low-lying rice fields and newly sown crop areas. Specifically, for rice, it is necessary to regulate the water level in the field appropriately (from 1 - 2 cm) to create favorable conditions for rice tillering. When it is cold, it is necessary to let water cover 2/3 of the rice plants to keep them warm.
Apply fertilizer and prune early to create conditions for rice plants to tiller early and concentrate; use the rice leaf color chart to adjust the amount of nitrogen fertilizer to apply appropriately, avoid excess nitrogen fertilization which can easily cause leaf blast disease.
For rice fields that are cold, grow slowly, and rice fields that are sown late in the season, it is necessary to increase care and use foliar fertilizers such as Atonic, superphosphate, Potassium Humate... to spray to help the rice plants recover quickly, grow strong and concentrated tillers, and shorten the growth time.
Focus on killing rats and golden apple snails, use safe herbicides; increase inspection of pests in the tillering stage of rice such as rice blast, various types of planthoppers, small leaf rollers... and take timely measures to limit the spread of pests and diseases.
For corn, peanuts, and vegetables, it is necessary to take advantage of the warm and sunny weather to focus on sowing and completing the remaining area; increase the application of potassium and phosphate fertilizers to increase resistance when severe cold occurs. Regularly monitor pests and diseases, pay attention to cutworms, fall armyworms that damage corn, and wilt disease on peanuts... to have effective prevention measures.
“The agricultural sector also directed relevant units to assign staff to stay close to the grassroots, coordinate with localities to guide farmers to fertilize and prune early and at the right stage; organize the planting of upland crops. Check, forecast and guide farmers on effective measures to care for and prevent pests and diseases on crops,” Ms. Phuong added.
