Opening of training course to improve working skills with gender perspective for reporters and editors

The training program aims to raise journalists’ understanding and awareness of gender equality, while also providing in-depth knowledge of gender equality and gender-based violence. It equips journalists with skills to develop gender-inclusive and gender-sensitive journalism issues.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Thi Thu Hang - Head of the Professional Department of the Vietnam Journalists Association delivered the opening speech of the program.

Speaking at the program, Associate Professor, Dr. Do Thi Thu Hang - Member of the Standing Committee, Head of the Professional Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association said that the training course is very necessary for reporters and journalists, which contributes to improving their working skills and gender sensitivity in their professional activities. In fact, journalism is always one of the important fields in the process of promoting gender equality, so that the public can better understand gender, solve urgent problems of women and girls... promote human rights, women's rights in the Vietnamese legal system.

The training was held at the Vietnam Press Museum where participants could see the historical axis of Vietnamese press when approaching gender issues and gender equality. Through the long-standing publications displayed from the early 20th century until now, we can learn more about Vietnamese press in the struggle for the progressive development of women.

Journalist Do Thi Thu Hang emphasized: Nowadays, many female journalists working in press agencies and female students studying at journalism schools are also being given maximum conditions in the process of studying and working. However, in the process of working in life, we see that in reality there are still gender stereotypes, gender barriers, gender equality, gender roles, gender stereotypes... Journalists have the right awareness but it is not enough when we want to create change. Each journalist needs to better understand the principles, content and methods of creating that change... contributing to improving the quality of journalistic works towards the goal of women's advancement and gender equality.

At the program, Master Le Van Son - Center for Gender, Family and Community Development Studies shared some basic and advanced concepts of gender, analyzed gender stereotypes, and gender lenses in press products.

The training program "Advanced skills in gender-based work for reporters and editors" had more than 20 participants.

In addition, journalist Do Thi Thu Hang also conveyed the content about the quality requirements for a gender-sensitive press product, building the theme of a gender-related press product, a gender-integrated and gender-sensitive press product.

According to the Organizing Committee, through the training course, it is hoped that members will grasp and resolve three deep gender biases in press products, and grasp some basic concepts and implications of gender concepts in practice.

Lecturers and students evaluate and comment on journalistic works based on gender criteria.

Trainees will have a firm grasp of the quality criteria of some journalistic products and identify the potential for improving the quality of journalistic products to meet the requirements of gender sensitivity in journalistic products.
