Mr. Le Van Dong's mud-free eel farm (Dong Phu commune, Dong Son district, Thanh Hoa province) was built in 2020. Before becoming the owner of the eel farm, Mr. Dong used to be in the stone cladding business.

Mr. Dong said that the process of coming to the eel farming profession came from passion and fate. One time, he accidentally came across the model of raising eels in cement tanks in Vinh Long province, which brought high economic efficiency, he found it suitable for the conditions in his hometown. From then on, Mr. Dong decided to quit the stone cladding profession and return to his hometown to start a business of raising eels.

To implement the model, in early 2020, Mr. Dong spent all his accumulated capital, about 350 million VND, and packed his bags to go to Vinh Long to learn how to raise eels. 3 months later, he returned to his hometown, reused his family's garden land, and built more than 10 cement tanks to test-raise 2,500 eel fry.

Right from his first start-up, the young man was successful beyond expectations. The first batch of eels grew well, with high yield. He sold about 4 tons to the market, and after deducting all expenses, he made a profit of 160 million VND.

After initial success, he decided to "bet" to get rich, spending all his assets to expand the scale of the farm to 30 cement tanks, and signing a contract with 5 satellite farms in the locality. Up to now, the eel output is about 30 tons per year (of which the family farm is 10 tons, the satellite farm is 20 tons). After deducting all expenses, he earns a profit of 300-500 million VND.

According to Mr. Dong, raising eels without mud is not difficult but requires high techniques. To help the eels grow well, he built a fairly methodical water system and treatment tank.

"Eels are susceptible to bacterial infections, skin and intestinal diseases. The main cause is the water source. Therefore, I have to change the water twice a day. In addition, the water must be treated through a filter tank before being put into the barn. In addition, we must regularly monitor and supplement vitamin C and digestive enzymes when the eels show signs of illness," the farm owner shared.

According to Mr. Dong, due to the harsh climate in the Central region, only one batch of eels can be raised each year. After about 11-12 months of raising, the eels can be sold. Currently, the price of commercial eels that Mr. Dong's family sells on the market ranges from 100,000 VND to 120,000 VND/kg.

The market that Mr. Dong is targeting is mainly restaurants in the province. In early 2023, Mr. Dong will build an additional area to process eel rolls to serve customers. With this product, he sells about 1.5 tons of finished eel to the market each month, with prices ranging from 180,000 to 250,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Nguyen Chi Cuong, Chairman of the Dong Son District Gardening and Farming Association, said that Mr. Dong's mud-free eel farm is a typical model, bringing high economic efficiency.

"This eel farming model is very new, the largest scale in Dong Son district. In particular, Mr. Dong's farming method is very scientific, so it brings high efficiency. The locality is continuing to monitor and encourage members of the district to visit and learn. If it is stable, we will promote the replication of this model, and at the same time guide Mr. Dong's family to develop eel meat rolls into an OCOP product (local strength product)", said Mr. Cuong.
