Hanoi Young man, 28 years old, married for many years without children, difficulty in marital life, doctor's examination discovered sexual development disorder.
He was short, only 1.4 m tall, and had been using the toilet in a sitting position like a woman since he was a child. Because of his fear, he did not seek medical treatment. Only after he got married and could not have children did he decide to seek treatment.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Viet Hoa, Head of the Department of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery, Viet Duc Hospital, discovered that he had a severe hypospadias defect in the perineum. Chromosomal and endocrine tests showed a rare disorder of sex development, with chromosomes of 45 XO and 46 XY - that is, both male and female chromosomes.
On May 16, Associate Professor Dr. Hoa said that this was a case of late detection of gender disorder and intervention, affecting the psychology. The doctor determined that this patient was more male than female, so surgery was performed to restore the male gender.
The patient had surgery to reconstruct his penis and create a 12cm long urethra from the perineum to the tip of the glans. After 10 days, he urinated normally like other men. The patient's ability to have children is currently unknown.
"If you and your husband still don't have children in 6 months, you should go to the hospital to plan for reproductive support," said Dr. Hoa.

According to Dr. Hoa, many cases of boys with severe hypospadias, testicles not descending into the scrotum, are mistaken for girls. In fact, many congenital malformations in young children such as cardiovascular, neurological, limb, are detected before birth and treated immediately after birth. Particularly, genitourinary malformations in children, if not manifested externally, are very difficult to detect for early treatment. In some cases, the gender is re-determined when the patient is past adulthood, greatly affecting life, work and fertility.
For early detection and timely treatment, Viet Duc Hospital will examine and provide free consultation on common diseases in children on May 27. Children will be screened for urinary and genital abnormalities, liver - bile - pancreas diseases, stomach, intestines, constipation; hand and foot abnormalities, chest deformities; benign and malignant tumors.
