An airstrike on the city of Tubas killed five people, who the Israeli military said were armed with explosives that could have endangered Israeli forces. The Israeli military also said it destroyed several weapons manufacturing facilities as well as a car rigged with a remote-detonated explosive device.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said rescue teams had recovered five bodies from the area and taken them to hospital.
In another development in the city of Tulkarm, the military said soldiers, with the support of police and intelligence agencies, killed an armed militia member.
There has been no official confirmation from Palestinian armed factions about the identities of those killed.
Roads in and out of Tubas have been blocked and Israeli military vehicles, including road diggers and armoured vehicles, have been spotted moving through the city, which borders Jordan in the northern West Bank.
On Wednesday, as the operation got underway, the military reported a vehicle-ramming attack in Ramallah, West Bank, saying the driver of a fuel tanker accelerated into several Israeli soldiers before being shot down. The Israeli military said one soldier was killed.

Over the past two weeks, Israeli forces have carried out a series of operations in the northern West Bank, including raids in Tubas, Jenin and Tulkarm. All three cities have a presence of armed factions including Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Fatah.
There were also reports of serious clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants. Roads and infrastructure in three cities were severely damaged as Israeli forces dug up roads and demolished homes.
Qais Ambar, a resident of the Tulkarm refugee camp where two Palestinians were killed in a raid on Tuesday, said residents were forced to evacuate their homes after they were destroyed, forcing many to take refuge in mosques in the city.
"The bulldozers swept through the houses, leaving my neighbors' houses in ruins. They forced us to evacuate."
Violence in the West Bank has increased since the Gaza war began, with a series of raids by Israeli forces leading to numerous arrests and frequent gun battles between security forces and Palestinian militants.
More than 680 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 7, 2023, including both militants and civilians.
During the same period, about 40 Israeli soldiers and civilians were killed in attacks carried out by Palestinian gunmen.
