iOS 18 will allow iPhone screens and batteries to be replaced by third parties

Apple is notorious for keeping hardware and software on its devices closed, making it difficult for users to replace third-party components. For example, when users opt for a third-party screen repair on their iPhone, they lose the True Tone feature provided by iOS. Similarly, installing a non-Apple battery disables relevant metrics in the Settings app. Now, iOS 18 is changing everything.

Apple is increasingly loosening its grip on third-party iPhone parts replacements.

According to The Verge , Apple revealed that it will no longer disable some iOS features after a phone is repaired by a third party. Specifically, iOS 18 will allow True Tone and battery health metrics to continue working after users install a non-Apple display and battery.

However, the company warns that even if True Tone is still active, the feature may not work reliably or display colors accurately. That's because Apple's calibration process is designed for its own hardware, and replacement components may not work the same way.

For example, Apple says it’s possible for users to buy used batteries that are advertised as new. When that happens, the iPhone’s battery stats may show a maximum capacity of 100 percent when it actually isn’t. So while the company doesn’t block these stats, it does warn users that they can’t be verified and that they may not reflect the battery’s actual health.

At this point, Apple hasn’t said exactly when these changes will be rolled out, but it’s likely to happen in September, when the company will officially release iOS 18. It’s also unclear whether the changes will apply to all models or just the latest iPhones.
