After months of testing, Indonesia and Malaysia have jointly launched cross-border transactions via standard quick response code (QRIS) payments.

The adoption of QRIS in payments allows users to use QR codes to pay in both countries, thereby eliminating the need to exchange money or carry credit cards.

QRIS is a QR code developed by Bank Indonesia and the Indonesian Payment System Association to facilitate cashless transactions and payments in Indonesia. The country has signed a similar agreement with Thailand and is seeking similar agreements with Singapore and the Philippines. As of March, the total value of QRIS transactions reached Rp 15,350 billion (US$1.04 million) with nearly 135 million transactions. The Indonesian government is aiming to reach 45 million QRIS users and 1 billion transactions this year.
