More than 10,000 candidates flocked to Thanh Xuan and Cau Giay districts to take the entrance exams for grades 6 and 10 of three university-affiliated high schools on the morning of June 4.

Hanoi's weather today is around 29 degrees Celsius, quite cool after last night's rain. From 6am, thousands of parents sending their children to take the 6th grade entrance exam to Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School, Hanoi National University of Education, poured into Xuan Thuy Street, Cau Giay District.

Mrs. Bui Thi Lan, over 70 years old, living in Gia Lam, and her daughter and her husband took their grandchild to the exam. Mrs. Lan said that the roads were clear and the weather was cool, making everyone feel quite comfortable. Her family brought a specialized container, prepared food and drinks so that after the exam, the grandchild could go on a picnic.

"The boy was a bit nervous, so he took the time to review his lessons while sitting in the car. I also brought green bean cakes for him to eat for good luck," said Ms. Lan.

Last week, Mrs. Lan also took her grandson to take the Foreign Language Secondary School exam. That time, he said he could only do half of it, so Mrs. Lan encouraged him to "take the exam to gain experience". According to Mrs. Lan, her grandson did not go to review, he just stayed home and did the previous year's questions that his mother printed out. The family decided to let him take the exam to test his ability, not to focus on whether he passed or not.

"Today is even more crowded than yesterday. I heard that the math test at Nguyen Tat Thanh school is very difficult, I hope you stay calm and do well on the test," said Ms. Lan.

After her child entered the exam room, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai in Dong Anh and some other parents found shade to eat and wait for their child. Ms. Mai said that her child was best at Math, always getting a score of 9.5 or higher.

"But I don't know how it will be when I take the exam," said Ms. Mai. She said that before going, her child was in a good mood, but when she saw so many students and parents, she was a bit worried.

This year, Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School received approximately 6,000 applications, with a quota of 260 (competition ratio 1/23), the largest number among schools organizing entrance exams for grade 6 in Hanoi.

According to Principal Pham Sy Cuong, this is the largest number of applications ever, partly due to the large number of "golden dragon" candidates. The entrance exam includes Math (45 minutes), Vietnamese (45 minutes) and English (30 minutes). The content is mainly in the 5th grade program. The school adds all three subjects, plus incentive points for students with TOEFL certificates or who have won some awards, for admission consideration. The benchmark score was announced on June 12. In 2022, the school's benchmark score is 24.5, meaning students must score more than 8 points in each subject to be admitted.

In Thanh Xuan district, thousands of students and parents also flocked to take the 10th grade entrance exam at the High School for Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, causing a slight traffic jam on Nguyen Trai Street, the section in front of the two schools' gates.

Thu Mai, from Dong Da District, arrived at the School of Humanities at 6:30 a.m. This is the third specialized school she has taken the exam for in the past four days, after Pedagogy and Foreign Languages. On June 10-12, Mai will take the exam for Son Tay High School and Nguyen Hue High School. The female student said she takes both Literature and English exams, so she takes advantage of every opportunity.

Mai thinks her chances of passing the English exam are higher than those of passing the Literature exam, so she was quite comfortable with the exam this morning.

"Last night, I didn't study but rested, played games, and then went to bed early. I wanted to keep my spirits up and not get too nervous before the exam," Mai said.

In the morning, Mai and nearly 1,600 candidates took the general Math, Literature and English exams; in the afternoon, they took the specialized subject exam, which was one of the three subjects Literature, History and Geography. The admission score is the total score of the subjects on a 10-point scale, with the specialized subject multiplied by a factor of two. The school does not add priority points in admissions and does not consider direct admission. The results will be announced before July 1.

This is the fourth year of enrollment for the High School for Social Sciences and Humanities, and also the year with the largest number of applicants. Principal Nguyen Quang Lieu said he does not feel pressured because there are enough facilities, teachers, and question banks to serve the exam.

"We only focus on how to select the best students to train the elite," said Mr. Lieu.

Right next to the School of Humanities, the University of Natural Sciences welcomes nearly 3,000 students competing for 540 places in grade 10. This is considered the specialized school with the most achievements in international Olympic competitions in the country.

In My Dinh, about 5 km from the exam site, Pham Minh Dung, a student at Archimedes Academy, was taken to the exam by his father. Registering for the Chemistry major, the male student was quite worried because he did not do as well as expected on the Pedagogy major entrance exam two days ago.

"I hope I do my best, in good form," Dung said.

In addition to Chemistry, the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences also recruits specialized subjects in Mathematics, Information Technology, Physics, and Biology, a total of 540 students, taking the exam on June 4-5. Each candidate takes three exams including Mathematics, Literature (round 1) and specialized subjects (round 2). Students can register for up to 2/5 specialized subjects, as long as they do not overlap in exam times.

The admission score is the sum of the first round Math score and the specialized subject multiplied by two, maximum 30 points. The Literature score is only a condition and is not included in the admission score. Candidates must take all three exams, with no subject below 4. The school does not add priority points. The expected benchmark score will be announced before June 15.

Previously, on June 1 and 3, more than 13,000 students took the 6th and 10th grade entrance exams to the Foreign Language Specialized High School (Hanoi National University) and the 10th grade entrance exam to the Hanoi National University of Education Specialized High School.
