TP - According to teachers, currently students are "running" after many separate exams, studying for various certificates is very difficult, stressful, expensive... On the other hand, this also puts students in difficult areas at a disadvantage because it reduces their chances of being admitted to the desired schools.

Nguyen Tung Anh, a 12th grade student at Viet Duc High School (Hanoi), shared that since 11th grade, Tung Anh has been practicing for the IELTS exam to be considered for early admission. In 12th grade, he spent time studying all subjects, reviewing for the Hanoi National University's Competency Assessment exam in March 2025 and the high school graduation exam in June.

In addition to studying in class, this student spends a lot of time at home reviewing lessons and practicing different types of questions to prepare for exams. Especially this year's high school graduation exam is predicted to be more difficult.

“Looking at the sample math questions, it can be seen that it is very difficult to get a score of 9 or higher this year. English is similar because there are many types of difficult questions and different ways of asking. The Literature questions are no longer the type of questions where students just memorize the knowledge in the textbooks to get a guaranteed score. Students have to expand their knowledge by reading more books and newspapers, updating current events, hot issues of youth and society to practice doing the questions, so it is quite difficult,” said Tung Anh.

“The percentage of admission quotas for universities based on results from separate exams (different from the annual high school graduation exam) is very large, reducing opportunities for students who only take the high school graduation exam,” said Ms. Le Thi Huong.

Ms. Tran Thu Hue, a math teacher at a high school in Hanoi whose child is in 12th grade this year, said that in order to have a wider path to university admission, her son took both the SAT and IELTS exams at the same time, not to mention taking extra subjects to take the National University's Aptitude Test, so his study schedule is tight and costs tens of millions of dong.

Mr. Dinh Duc Hien, Vice Principal of FPT Bac Giang Secondary and High School, also said that pursuing many exams at the same time makes students run around to study extra, exhausting themselves to achieve their goals. Some students spread their application documents to many places to increase their chances of being admitted. The schedule of studying until 10 pm is real because after school hours, many students also go to extra classes 2 consecutive evenings. Students have to study so hard because each separate entrance exam has different ways of setting questions and evaluating.

Disadvantages for students in remote areas

From the perspective of local education management, Ms. Le Thi Huong, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province, said that the development of separate entrance exams and diverse admission methods brings many opportunities for students, especially those in favorable areas, suitable for many subjects according to the provisions of the Law on Higher Education.

However, this also poses many challenges for students in disadvantaged areas. Firstly, there is financial difficulty as they and their families may not be able to afford the costs of exams and preparation. This may cause them to miss out on the opportunity to take private exams.

Second, students in disadvantaged areas lack learning resources. In many cases, students do not have access to quality exam preparation materials or the opportunity to attend supplementary classes, which reduces their ability to prepare for exams.

“In addition, many students in remote areas may have difficulty traveling to the exam venue. Not all of them can easily travel to big cities to take the exam and may be under greater psychological pressure than their friends in the city,” Ms. Huong said.
