In an interview with the US weekly Newsweek, Russian Ambassador to Washington - Mr. Anatoly Antonov - accused the US of deliberately "turning things upside down" through the statement that Moscow is said to be not ready to negotiate peace with Ukraine.

Ambassador Antonov attacked: “We consider statements by representatives of the US administration about Russia's alleged lack of readiness for peace talks with Ukraine as a deliberate attempt to 'turn things upside down'.”
According to Ambassador Antonov, “there can be no talk of any idea of a ‘freeze’ of the conflict” in Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin “did not mention anything like that”. The Russian diplomat stressed that any agreement between Moscow and Kiev “must take into account the situation ‘on the ground’”.
Ambassador Antonov asserted that the possibility of “retreat or withdrawal of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to the assumed lines of demarcation is excluded,” noting that Russia’s borders are “clearly expressed” in the Russian Constitution and that they “include new federal subjects.”
The Russian diplomat concluded: “President Vladimir Putin has made it clear that Russia needs tangible, legally recorded ‘on paper’ security commitments.
However, given the current situation in Ukraine, it is unclear who exactly can sign this document, taking into account the expiration of (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky's term. This term has lost its legitimacy. This is a serious issue that needs to be discussed.”
