The circulation of storms No. 2 and 3 has caused many floods in localities in Son La province. Floods have caused many areas of rice and crops to be buried, flooded, and broken. To limit damage to farmers, the provincial agricultural extension force has actively supported farmers to restore production.
In Tong Co commune, Thuan Chau district, floods damaged over 510 hectares of rice, nearly 300 hectares of vegetables, 653 hectares of industrial crops and fruit trees; completely washed away 144 hectares of fish ponds. To help farmers quickly restore production after the floods, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center and the Thuan Chau District Community Agricultural Extension Team organized consultation sessions, provided technical guidance at the grassroots level and guided them right in the fields. In addition, they provided immediate support for some agricultural supplies, helping people develop production and stabilize their lives.
Ms. Lo Thanh Binh, an officer of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, Head of the Community Agricultural Extension Team of Thuan Chau District, shared: Immediately after the flood receded, the Community Agricultural Extension Team assigned members to go to each village, survey and assess the damage with the people. After understanding the needs of the people, we coordinated with the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center to organize 2 direct instruction sessions in the fields and gardens; encouraging people to change the crop structure appropriately, improve economic efficiency, and adapt to climate change.
Participating in the fish farming technical consultation session, Mr. Luong Van Tuong, Co village, Tong Co commune, Thuan Chau district, said: Due to the impact of the flood, my family suffered damage to a fish pond, losing about 2,000 grass carp, not to mention other species. Today, after receiving detailed answers from the agricultural extension officer about how to restore the fish pond after the flood, I feel more secure. The family focused on preparing the pond, following the instructions of the agricultural extension officer so that the fish grow quickly, restoring the family's production.
After nearly 2 months of being deeply flooded, the lives of people in Phieng Nghe village, Chieng Den commune, City were disrupted, production was difficult. Immediately after the water receded, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center organized the program "Youth of the Agricultural sector and farmers restore production after the flood in 2024". Ms. Tran Thi Hieu, a member of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, informed: We have supported nearly 1,170 breeding chickens, 156 packages of vegetable seeds, 78 packages of veterinary medicine, 78 vials of poultry vaccines for 39 households in Phieng Nghe village to restore production as soon as possible.
Moved when receiving the support of chicken breeds, veterinary medicine, poultry vaccines and vegetable seeds, Ms. Quang Thi Canh, Phieng Nghe village, said: The flood has submerged the entire house and barn of the family, damaging nearly 200 poultry and 5,000m2 of coffee, peanuts and corn. Having just received the production support, the family is very grateful, the family is repairing the chicken barn, growing more vegetables to stabilize life.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture, after widespread heavy rains due to the impact of storms No. 2 and No. 3, the whole province had over 4,600 hectares of rice, 600 hectares of vegetables, over 1,066 hectares of annual crops; over 13,000 livestock and poultry damaged. To quickly restore production, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Agricultural Service Centers of districts and cities to go to the fields and gardens, instructing people to improve the soil, replant, and replant damaged rice areas; convert short-term crops to low-lying areas with high risk of flooding; clean livestock barns, prevent diseases before resuming livestock farming... At the same time, mobilize youth, officials, civil servants of the agricultural sector and organizations, individuals, and businesses to support trees and seedlings, giving priority to support for difficult areas, areas heavily damaged after natural disasters.
Ms. Ngan Thi Minh Thanh, Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, said: Currently, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center is continuing to advise and propose the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Agricultural Extension Center to distribute corn and vegetable seeds to people in flooded areas to urgently produce. At the same time, organize training courses to provide technical advice on agriculture for farmers. In addition, connect and support seeds and seedlings, ensure that people have enough conditions and necessary techniques to effectively restore production.
"Where there are farmers, there is agricultural extension" - agricultural extension officers continue to accompany farmers, speed up production recovery, rise up, and stabilize life after natural disasters.
