According to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhust, coach Erik Ten Hag and striker Martial had a verbal altercation on the pitch. The pair shouted and gestured, showing their displeasure with each other.

The Dutch tactician was unhappy with Martial as the French striker failed to keep up with Fabian Schar, allowing the Newcastle defender to pass the ball to Kieran Trippier for the only goal of the game.

During his time on the pitch, Martial did not leave any mark. It was not until the 61st minute that Martial left the pitch to make way for Hojlund. Marcus Rashford was also substituted at that time, the English striker had a disappointing match when he did not have a single shot on target.

Speaking after the match, coach Ten Hag said: "When you lose, you are always disappointed. I will talk to the whole team about what we can do better. But I believe they are resilient enough to solve the problem and come back immediately. We have experience and must be ready for the next match, do not worry too much about this defeat."

Evaluating Man Utd's performance, coach Ten Hag affirmed: "We had a difficult first half even though we entered the match with a ready mindset. We had a better performance in the final part of the match. I will talk to the players tomorrow to have better preparation for the match against Chelsea.

Man Utd are a resilient team. We have a long-term plan and will continue on our path. We had some chances. Man Utd also almost scored but they were offside. This game should have ended in a draw."

Man Utd ended their three-game winning streak in the Premier League with a lacklustre display at St James' Park. The Red Devils had 41% possession and eight shots on target, compared to Newcastle's 22 and four.

Ten Hag's side have failed to win any of their last 13 away games against a top-eight side, with three draws and 10 defeats. The last time they took three points away from a top-eight club was when Man Utd beat Tottenham 3-0 in October 2021.

Man Utd also lost three consecutive matches to Newcastle in all competitions for the first time in 101 years. Before the 0-1 defeat at St. James' Park on December 2, the "Red Devils" lost 0-3 to Newcastle in the fourth round of the English League Cup and 0-2 in the Premier League last year.
