Coach Ten Hag criticizes VAR for causing Man Utd to lose the match

(Dan Tri) - Erik ten Hag has criticised the "process" behind the controversial decision that helped West Ham win 2-1 against Man Utd at the London Stadium last night (October 27).

Man Utd thought they had done enough to earn a point at West Ham in round 9 of the Premier League before video assistant referee (VAR) Michael Oliver asked referee David Coote to check the collision between Matthijs de Ligt and Danny Ings in the final minutes of the match.

While the clash between the two players appeared to be minor, referee David Coote agreed with VAR's recommendation to award a penalty to West Ham. Jarrod Bowen calmly converted the spot-kick to seal a 2-1 win for the home side and make things worse for Man Utd.

"First of all, in football, the stronger team doesn't always win. Today it was very clear, that's not how VAR works," Ten Hag said after the match.

He added: "The way VAR works, the way they run their process. Before the season, they explained the VAR process is that only when it's clear and obvious should they intervene. So what they didn't do against Tottenham when they needed to intervene for Bruno Fernandes' red card. VAR got it wrong and now they've got it wrong in intervening, both of which have had a huge impact on the outcome of games."

Asked whether he felt Coote was more influenced in this case by Oliver's status as a senior referee, Ten Hag said: "I'm not criticising any individual, but I'm criticising the process. Obviously off the pitch the VAR referee is Michael Oliver but on the pitch the referee has to make the decision at the last moment. I think it took Mr Coote three minutes to make this decision, but then he had to show great character to overturn it."

The defeat left United in 14th place in the table after being overtaken by West Ham. Ten Hag's side have won just three of their first nine Premier League games this season, something Ten Hag believes is partly down to bad luck.

"At the moment, luck is definitely not on my side, not for me, but for the team. Last season was no different, but we turned things around in the end and we are determined that it will be the same this time.

However, we have to turn things around and we will be successful if we continue to play like this. The matches against Brentford, Fenerbahce, or today, we played really well," Ten Hag added.

Man Utd will host Leicester City in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Thursday morning (October 31) before facing Enzo Maresca's in-form Chelsea at Old Trafford on November 3.
