The 12-hectare Bung Xang Lake project, part of the Mekong Delta Urban Upgrading Project - Can Tho City Sub-project, uses loans from the World Bank, with the Can Tho City ODA Project Management Board as the investor.

The total investment cost is 222 billion VND, started in mid-2016, to contribute to flood prevention in the central area and urban beautification of Can Tho City. However, the current state of this project is quite shabby, with many items still unfinished.

Bung Xang Lake is invested in renovation to prevent flooding and create landscape for Can Tho city.

Bung Xang Lake is located in the area of ​​3 wards Xuan Khanh, An Khanh, Hung Loi (Ninh Kieu district). The project includes the following items: dredging 280,000m3 of mud, building 2.8km of traffic roads around the lake; over 2.5km of embankment around the lake; domestic water supply systems, drainage, lighting, trees and parks...

The walkway at Bung Xang Lake has been littered with trash for many years.

Currently, the walkway around the lake is built nearly a meter lower than the road surface, many sections have become garbage dumps. The road around the lake (behind Can Tho University) is also not complete, with overgrown grass. The middle of the lake is mostly water hyacinth, garbage, and a risk of pollution.

Meanwhile, Xang Thoi Lake located in Thoi Binh ward, Ninh Kieu district has a completely different appearance.

Xang Thoi Lake is 6.5 hectares wide, originally a natural water spinach pond, in 2006 it was renovated and upgraded with the function of regulating water and creating environmental landscape.

Xang Thoi Lake consists of two parts: a round lake and a long lake.

At the end of 2023, Ninh Kieu District People's Committee started the project of dredging Xang Thoi Lake, renovating the embankment, park and road around the lake with a budget of nearly 50 billion VND.

According to Giao thong Newspaper reporters in this area, after one year of construction, the items including the embankment, park and road around the lake have been completed. The lighting system around and in the middle of the lake has also been put into trial operation.

Locals and tourists are very excited to come to Xang Thoi Lake at night and see the lighting system around and the miniature landscape in the middle of the lake. The project will be accepted and handed over in the coming days.

Huynh Cuong Street around the lake has been paved with new, flat asphalt, and the sidewalks have been renovated to be spacious and neat.

Along with De Tham and Huynh Cuong streets, Xang Thoi Lake is a night-time economic development area that has been implemented by Ninh Kieu District People's Committee for more than a year. And in the coming time, the local government will call for investment to create more highlights for this area.

When will Bung Xang Lake be handed over?

Speaking with Giao Thong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Vice Chairman of Ninh Kieu District People's Committee, said that the functions of Bung Xang and Xang Thoi lakes are to prevent flooding and create landscape for the city.

Regarding Bung Xang Lake, Ninh Kieu district leaders said that many items of this project have not been completed, so the departments have not yet accepted them.

Bung Xang Lake will be handed over in its current condition.

However, the solution is that the district will accept the handover in its current state. Accordingly, once the handover is accepted, the district will have the basis to arrange funds to clean up this area. For now, the district can only mobilize from socialized sources, the Youth Union, and the Women's Union to occasionally clean up the environment.

Regarding the unfinished items, the leader of the ODA Project Management Board of Can Tho City said that they have transferred to the works in the Can Tho City Development Project adjustment package and enhancing urban adaptability with a budget of about 70 billion VND.
