Realizing 5G technology

Báo Sài Gòn Giải phóngBáo Sài Gòn Giải phóng17/10/2024

Along with the completion of the 2G shutdown roadmap, October 15 marked an important milestone for Vietnam's telecommunications sector when the 5G network officially provided commercial services for the first time. The 5G network promises to bring many breakthrough benefits, contributing to promoting the development of the digital economy and national digital transformation.

New step for network operators

Viettel Group has just become the first mobile network operator in Vietnam to provide commercial 5G services with more than 6,500 base transceiver stations (BTS), covering 100% of the area of 63/63 provinces and cities. Currently, users can experience this network's free 5G by texting TN5G to 191 or registering for packages...

Major General Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group, said that by mastering many important core network systems, Viettel has brought Vietnam into the top 5 countries to produce 5G network equipment, after Sweden, Finland, China and South Korea. The launch of 5G service is a new milestone that strongly demonstrates Vietnam's pioneering and breakthrough journey in mobile.

Viettel is the first network operator in Vietnam to announce the commercialization of 5G.

For VNPT customers, from October 13 to November 15, VinaPhone network users with 5G phones will be able to participate in the free super-speed 5G experience program (50GB of data, used within 30 days). Accordingly, when operating in areas with 5G waves, VinaPhone subscribers will receive a notification message inviting them to experience the free service.

According to the plan, by the end of 2024, VNPT will complete the installation of over 3,000 VinaPhone 5G transmission stations to ensure strong, stable and continuous coverage, especially in urban areas and major economic centers nationwide. VinaPhone 5G promises to provide access speeds 10 times faster than 4G networks, along with low latency to improve the experience of using mobile internet, online gaming and other smart applications, with the highest performance.

Meanwhile, MobiFone, after acquiring the C3 frequency block (3,800-3,900MHz) in July 2024, is focusing on completing the infrastructure and preparing for 5G commercialization. A representative of this network said that customers will experience 5G services in November 2024. MobiFone is implementing a model of infrastructure sharing cooperation with network operators with suitable 5G frequency bands, helping to optimize the resources of network operators, bringing customers the best experiences.

Promote the development of public services

According to the Ministry of Information and Communications, promoting the application of 5G technology in industries is a prerequisite for comprehensive 5G deployment in Vietnam. Therefore, businesses need to keep up with trends, research 5G applications suitable to industry characteristics, and join hands with telecommunications businesses to innovate and apply 5G solutions in practice to improve operational efficiency.

On the other hand, 5G also helps promote many fields, such as: manufacturing, smart traffic management, energy management, construction and mining, digital education, remote healthcare, smart retail and smart cities...

According to Mr. Scott Minehane, CEO of Windsor Place Consulting, an expert of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), with super-fast and stable connection speed, 5G will be a strong catalyst for Vietnam to accelerate digital transformation and comprehensive digitalization in many fields.

With Vietnamese network operators deploying 5G services, people will experience public services faster, more conveniently and more modernly than ever before. “The deployment of 5G technology services not only helps government agencies operate effectively but also brings a comfortable digital life, meeting all the needs of the people,” said Mr. Scott Minehane.

Research by the Institute of Information and Communications Strategy (Ministry of Information and Communications) shows that by 2025, 5G technology is forecast to contribute about 7.34% to GDP growth. With 403 industrial parks (which could increase to 558 industrial parks by 2030), 5,000 mining sites, 34 seaports, 22 airports (10 international airports) nationwide... this is an opportunity for telecommunications businesses to focus on providing 5G services.

Therefore, network operators need to soon deploy solutions to provide connection infrastructure and information technology on 5G technology in the above areas to take advantage of 5G's advantages. Furthermore, Decision No. 942/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on Approving the Strategy for e-Government Development towards Digital Government for the 2021-2025 period, with a vision to 2030, has set the goal that people and businesses can use digital services according to their individual needs, conveniently, easily, without paperwork and without physical presence if not required by law.

The development of e-government and digital government is determined to be closely linked to solving major problems in order to better serve people and businesses. Therefore, 5G also needs to strongly demonstrate its connectivity role to serve the country's digital transformation goals.

Viettel has launched 19 packages for individual users, including 11 prepaid packages and 8 postpaid packages. VNPT and MobiFone have not announced the time to deploy this new generation mobile technology, although VNPT is allowing 5G trial experiences in many provinces and cities.

Accordingly, Viettel's packages are calculated monthly, with costs ranging from 135,000-480,000 VND for prepaid users and from 200,000-2 million VND for postpaid users. Each package provides different rights, in addition to internet capacity, there are other incentives, such as when making domestic and international phone calls, accessing social networks or utilities for watching TV and storing.

Compared to the 4G package, the 5G package has a higher price, such as the lowest 5G package costs 135,000 VND/month, almost double the 70,000 VND/month of the 4G package, but the capacity is 8 times larger, with many utilities...
