The statement was made by Ms. von der Leyen - a member of the German Christian Democratic Party (CDU) - at a meeting of the CDU Federal Executive Board. The CDU Federal Executive Board has nominated Ms. von der Leyen as the party's leading candidate in the upcoming European elections.
The position of EC President must be appointed after the European Parliament (EP) elections in June. According to the rules, a candidate from the party with the best election results will be appointed to this position.
According to current polls, the European People's Party (EPP) is leading. Therefore, it is very likely that Ms. von der Leyen will continue to serve as President of the EC for another term.
Ursula von der Leyen, 65, took office as EC President in December 2019. Her tenure has so far been largely shaped by the Covid-19 crisis and the conflict in Ukraine.
During the pandemic, the EC has organized the joint procurement of Covid-19 vaccines and set up a huge reconstruction program for the European economy. In relation to the conflict in Ukraine, the EC has a great responsibility in organizing support for Ukraine.
