According to Sky News, two children were killed and nine others were injured, six of whom are in critical condition after the incident. Two adults are also in critical condition after the "brutal attack".
The suspect, a 17-year-old boy born in Cardiff, Wales, and living in the village of Banks in Lancashire, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
The stabbing took place during a yoga and dance class for children aged between six and 11 at Hart Space in Southport, Merseyside, led by two teachers.
According to Merseyside Police Chief Serena Kennedy, a man armed with a knife stormed into the classroom and began attacking students at 11:47 a.m. on July 29 local time (about 5:47 p.m. on the same day Vietnam time), just about 10 minutes before class was scheduled to end.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found several people, including several children, brutally attacked and seriously injured, with two adults reportedly injured while trying to protect the attacked children.
The motive for the incident remains unclear, Ms Kennedy said, but it is not being treated as terrorism-related at this time, although North West England Counter Terrorism Police have offered to assist local police forces with their investigation.
King Charles III sent his "sincerest condolences" to the families and loved ones of the victims while Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the events in Southport were "truly horrific" and the whole country was shocked by the incident.
UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said she was deeply concerned about the incident. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the incident. Police have advised people to avoid the scene of the stabbing, but stressed there is no longer a significant threat.
