British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said he is ready to send troops to Ukraine if necessary if a deal is reached to end the conflict with Russia.

Just before an emergency meeting of European leaders on February 17, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was ready and willing to send British troops to Ukraine to join the peacekeeping force.

In an article published in The Daily Telegraph, Prime Minister Starmer declared that Britain was ready to play a leading role in Ukraine's defense and security, pledging to contribute £3 billion ($3.77 billion) a year until 2030.

Mr. Zelensky admitted that Ukraine 'would have difficulty surviving' without US military support.

An end to the conflict “when it comes, cannot be just a temporary truce before Russia strikes again,” Mr Starmer stressed.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron urged European allies to hold an emergency summit in Paris to discuss the next steps on Ukraine, after the US sent a message that it would negotiate with Russia without Europe, even Ukraine.

The meeting, chaired by Mr Macron, is expected to include British Prime Minister, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, among other European leaders. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are also expected to attend. The aim of the conference is to discuss how to bring together partners involved in peace and security in Europe.

Meanwhile, US officials are reportedly travelling to Saudi Arabia to prepare for a meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Mr Trump has assured Ukraine that he will have a seat at the negotiating table, but it is unclear whether Europe will be invited.

Sky News quoted a Ukrainian official as saying that the country's delegation is in Saudi Arabia to pave the way for President Zelensky's visit.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with CBS News on February 16 that Ukraine and Europe will engage in substantive negotiations to end the conflict.

“Eventually, there will come a point where if there are real negotiations, Ukraine will be involved because they were attacked and Europe will be involved because they sanctioned Putin and Russia. But we are not there yet,” Rubio said.
