The first two localities to finalize the third exam subject for grade 10

Immediately after the Ministry of Education and Training issued the Regulations on Secondary and High School Admissions, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training provided information about the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025.

According to Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, this year's 10th grade entrance exam in the city includes three subjects: Literature, Math and Foreign Language (mainly English).

Of which, Literature and Math have 120 minutes each, Foreign Language has 90 minutes. The exam is expected to take place in early June 2025. Previously, keeping Foreign Language as the third exam subject for grade 10 was proposed many times by Ho Chi Minh City.

After Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Duong is the second locality to announce the third subject of the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, this province chose English.

In recent years, Hai Duong has reduced the number of subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam from four to three, including Math, Literature, and English. Therefore, the upcoming 10th grade exam will basically keep the same number of subjects as in previous years.

In addition to the above two localities, Quang Nam, Khanh Hoa, and Tien Giang plan to choose English as the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam. This is to help motivate and encourage students to study this subject more in the context of international integration and make English the second language at school.

Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training issued an official dispatch requesting the Departments of Education and Training to urgently organize the selection and early announcement of the third subject or exam according to regulations to facilitate students in studying, completing the program and reviewing, preparing well for the conditions, creating a mentality of readiness to take the exam and achieving good results.

According to Circular 30 on the regulations for secondary and high school admissions of the Ministry of Education and Training, the entrance exam for grade 10 from 2025 will be unified nationwide in the method of examination. Students will take the exam in Math, Literature and a third subject.

The third subject can be an independent subject or a combined subject, announced after the end of the first semester but no later than March 31 every year. In case the provinces choose an independent subject, this choice must ensure that no subject is taken for more than 3 consecutive years.

Regarding the exam time, the Circular stipulates: Literature 120 minutes; Math 90 minutes or 120 minutes; third exam 60 minutes or 90 minutes; combined exam 90 minutes or 120 minutes. The exam content is within the general secondary education program, mainly grade 9.
