During this year's military recruitment, in Hoa An ward (Cam Le district, Da Nang city), two twin brothers volunteered to join the army and were accepted.
This special case is Nguyen Chi Chan and Nguyen Chi Chinh (born in 2007; living in an apartment building in Hoa An ward). On February 13, both brothers will join the army.
On February 8, in the 60m2 apartment, Chan and Chinh took the opportunity to fold military uniforms and clean the house to help their mother. The twins live with their mother, Nguyen Thi Hong Oanh (born in 1982), and her older brother.
Before going to work, Mrs. Oanh quickly wrote a few lines on a piece of paper with two 50,000 VND bills in the living room, telling her children not to go anywhere because it was raining. With 100,000 VND, Mrs. Oanh told her 3 children to eat 60,000 VND for breakfast, and the rest to buy food for lunch.
Chan and his younger brother Nguyen Chi Chinh were separated from their father when their parents divorced. Their mother had to work all kinds of jobs to take care of her children. Knowing their mother's hardships, Chan and Chinh, along with their brother, were obedient and well-behaved.
To raise her children, Mrs. Oanh worked hard, doing all kinds of jobs. Recently, she worked as an hourly housekeeper and had a more stable source of income.
Understanding their mother's hardships, the three brothers were all obedient and well-behaved. The eldest brother is currently attending a remedial course. Chan and Chinh dropped out of school after finishing 9th grade. The two brothers sometimes worked as hired laborers at a paper-making facility, and sometimes helped their mother clean by the hour to earn extra income.
When they turned 18 and learned about the military environment, Chan and Chinh discussed volunteering to join the army. This decision of the two brothers was supported by Mrs. Oanh.
Both brothers shared that they wanted to devote part of their youth to the task of protecting the Fatherland. Besides, the military environment also helped Chan and Chinh train themselves and become more mature.
The two young men added that they had their own career aspirations in the future. Chan wanted to learn how to mix drinks, and Chinh wanted to learn how to repair cars.
"Our plan after completing our military service is to learn a trade so we can shoulder the hardships with our mother and take care of her in her old age," Chan confided.
Chan shared that when they heard that the two brothers had applied to join the army, their grandparents were also very proud. Even though they sell lottery tickets, they still tried to give their two young grandchildren some money to encourage them to leave in good health. In January 2025, Mrs. Oanh also wanted to hold a birthday party for Chan and Chinh before their children left for the army, but the two brothers stopped their mother because they were afraid of spending money.
Ms. Oanh shared that her children had given up on being independent, so they all knew how to cook for themselves when they were still in elementary school and loved their mother very much. These days, every night, Ms. Oanh always spends time telling her two children to practice independence, discipline and seriousness when they join the army. In particular, she hopes that her two children will always try their best and complete their assigned tasks well.
“When I received the decision to join the army from my children, my feelings were hard to describe. I felt sad because I was about to be away from them for a while, but I was even happier when I saw that they had matured and were able to think about big things. I believe that when they are trained in a military environment, they will become more mature and fulfill their responsibilities as soldiers of the Vietnam People's Army,” Ms. Oanh expressed.
Mr. Le Minh Nam, Commander of the Military Command of Hoa An Ward, said that according to regulations, in case two brothers in the family go for military service examination together, only one will be considered successful. The other has the right to postpone until the other completes. However, in the case of Chan and Chinh, both submitted applications to volunteer for military service and were successful. The two brothers were assigned to the 971st Regiment under the Military Command of Da Nang City.
